2016 Recruiting

Rice has a new basketball coach, so I'm sure that's the reason he decommited, and I'm also sure Cincy, Kansas State, Nebraska and Ok St. have all moved on.

Josh committed to Mike Rhoades, who is still at Rice.

I don't know exactly why he decommitted -- I doubt Rice dumped him because it was considered a major coup when he committed -- but I do know a lot of schools backed off him because they thought Josh was solid with Rhoades.

He also decommitted in August, and the better schools that had originally offered may have already filled the slots they had available for wings. It's how it works sometimes when plans change.

Put it this way: If he picks Mason, we will be very fortunate. If we get Josh and Greg Williams in the 2016 class, that is a grand slam home run.

That is an interesting time for him to come visit, Andre Wesson mentioned scheduling a visit mid Oct also. A battle for our future SF position.

I could be wrong, but I think the staff would take both Hall and Wesson if both wanted to come.

Wesson is a crazy athlete, but pretty much all I've seen him do in videos is dunk.

"While Hall just decommitted from Rice, he does know what he is looking for in a school at the next level, 'I want a school with good academics, a place where I feel has a family atmosphere and where I can come in and make an immediate impact and play as a soon as possible.'

Hall is aware of who he is as a player and where he looks to fit in at the next level, 'I am a combo guard that likes to score and get my teammates involved. I also like to get the rebound on a fast break and push it in transition.' He has the length and the IQ to affect the game on both ends of the floor. He has great length and instincts on defense, allowing him to defend multiple positions. Offensively he is solid shooting from 15’ and in, he handles the ball well from the wing, and he is a competitor getting to the rim and in transition."

Well, we certainly check off all of those boxes.

Also just noticed 247 has Josh as a 4-star, which inevitably will be cut in half if he commits to Mason.

UNCW is the only school I'm worried about with regard to Josh. Kevin Keatts is a great recruiter and has done very well resurrecting UNCW's program from the ashes.

I hope Josh realizes that Keatts won't be there much longer. He only needs 1-2 really good seasons before somebody makes him an offer he can't refuse.

UNCW better hope Keatts' name doesn't surface in this Louisville probe. That would be less than ideal....

UNCW has three coming in this year who are his size and play the same position.

Well, we've got Abram and Grayer who are both combo guards 6'4 and above. Of course, after Holloway graduates, minutes at the 2 and 3 are probably pretty wide open to any of guard who can be effective, so we do have that going for us.

The other question is, will Paulsen want to get out in transition after a rebound? With Thompson (and Jenkins) ripping down rebounds after missed shots, we should have plenty of opportunities to push the pace so long as our guards don't trip over their shoe laces or the paint on the floor running down the court.

No.

Think Tony Bennett pace on both ends of the floor. Execute and take care of the ball on offense, stay compact, don't gamble and force contested jumpers on defense.

In other words, a time-tested recipe for mid-major success.

Could be what turns us off again is what I was thinking.

If Josh wants to run up and down the court a million miles an hour like his hair is on fire, Keatts is his guy and he should go with God.

But if he does, he should realize he'll be doing so in a crappy hollowed-out shell of a one-bid conference that hardly ever gets on TV and sends its champion to the NCAA tournament as a 14 seed.

I'm hopeful he'll recognize the enormous opportunity that awaits him at Mason. Paulsen is a winner, plain and simple. No sense pretending that his system is anything but deliberate.

I wish I could more than like this comment.
