He lives down the street from Richmond and is a 3pt shooter, he was bound for vcu.

He went to LC Bird which is in the Southside of Richmond. LC Bird is not known for it's academics. I would be surprised if he had the grades to go to UNC or Gtown..... he knew he could qualify for vcu no problem.

Tweeder, you're not incorrect about the academic quality of Bird's student body in general, although it does produce a couple hundred very smart grads each year through the Governor's Academy for Engineering Studies.

That said, Kenny is a smart kid who most certainly could've gotten into UNC or Georgetown or any other school that offered him. While it's true that vcu basically has zero admission standards for basketball players, that wasn't a factor in this case.

He wanted to play at home. Good for him. Our coaches are bringing in plenty of talented kids as well ... now just have to figure out how to turn them into a cohesive team.

My cousin went to LC Bird so I know the academics at Bird are not that strong, especially since they have been on the decline over the past 10 years. A lot has happened in the Southside of Richmond in the past 10 years.

Bird isn't that great academically and neither is Meadowbrook, but both are Chesterfield County schools. That means they're still better than any of the city high schools.

Point being, academics wasn't the deciding factor for Kenny. He wanted his family and friends to be able to watch him play and vcu is a top-15/20 program. Not sure why it's surprising to anyone that he made the choice he did.

Calling vcu a top 15 program if over egging the pudding a bit. Bu that doesn't really matter. Good get for them, wish we could convince more local talent to come to Fairfax.

Top 15-20, don't see how that's much of a stretch.

Have they performed like it in the tournament since 2011? Nope.

But it's really not surprising anymore for Richmond kids to stay home -- they seem to love playing for Shaka, their families can watch them play most games without having to get on a plane and they go to the tournament every year.

If we ever have a similar package to sell, more elite local recruits will come to Mason. While some kids need to get away for a variety of reasons, there's a lot to be said for staying home.

Don't have the link but it appears we made the final list for Charlie Thomas....the big kid that was at the open practice. I know he had some pretty big schools in his final list (Wisconsin) so who knows where we stack up but seems promising.

Well, two things, one, considering the number of teams who consistently make actual runs in the tournament I wouldn't put vcu even in the top 25 programs in the country.

And, two, we have to compete with Georgetown, Maryland and now a resurgent George Washington for local talent. It's quite a different ballgame here for recruits.

Mark Matthews committed to UNCW. We need to get a white player on the team that's where we are messing up. We need the fundamentals

Not to start an argument, but I feel like this kind of chiding racism should be called out. What does being white have to do with anything?

Pretty sure he was kidding.

Plus, we have Marko ... unless he counts as "beige" or something like that.
