No question about it. But you could argue UCLA was that last year.

Very telling that he supposedly turned down a $1 million raise with vcu, in my opinion.

Here's the main difference between UCLA and Texas: job security.

Howland made three straight Final Fours at UCLA and got fired three years later. Barnes made one Final Four at UT and held the job for 17 years.

Shaka smartly recognized that, unlike most P-5 jobs, Texas is all upside. You have all the resources and brand power to recruit a national title contending team, but because the fans care so much more about football, little of the pressure that he'd have at a basketball-crazy place like UCLA.

I sure as shit am not questioning his move to Texas. But I think there's something to Rohland's tweets around their AD sniffing other jobs. Combine that with the opportunity, and you have a perfect reason to leave.

Though I would argue that if there was "little of the pressure", Rick Barnes wouldn't have been fired. 16 out of 17 NCAA tourney appearances is pretty damn impressive. Him getting canned isn't unlike Howland getting canned in that regard.

Call it "NEW" pressure. There really is no reason for a program like Texas to not be the premier team in their state and be more than one and done in the NCAAs.

They want to be in the "elite" class like the Kentucky, Duke, etc.

I think Texas pressured Barnes out because their AD had already had contact with Shaka's agent and knew he was ready. vcu's AD reportedly was never contacted by Texas' AD to ask for permission to talk to Shaka.

No disagreement from me.

Best part:

"My biggest problem with Shaka is that he not only encouraged/demanded the practice facility, but he pushed us to spend a lot more on it than we would have otherwise. He then leaves 6 months before it's finished and possibly leaves an anchor attached to the program depending on our financial success over the post-Shaka decade. Personally, I don't think that's cool at all."

Now you will see the flip side of what "investing in the program" looks like.

Let's not forget that the university asked the students to pay for Shaka's salary with student fee increases as well (and if the rumors were true about the $2.5 million, I'm sure they would have gone to that well again).

I'm dead serious. If a meteor smashed into my house today and destroyed it, along with my ColecoVision, bottlecap collection and all my other precious artifacts (except wife, son, dogs)...

This would still be a pretty damn good week.

Yep took the new car down to campus and just drove around went to the Pat Dome- looking forward to next season. Good to be part of Mason Nation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe University of Houston had the same fate after 5 final fours and decades of success. Major investments followed by a string of bad hires plunged them into debt and NCAA purgatory.
