2014 Recruiting

Porter doesn't have a back to the basket game, but he does have a decent jumper. He's coordinated enough to easily add a jump hook and a few basic post moves. I don't see him ever being a Will Thomas post player. I actually see him more in the mold of Rob Loe of St. Louis with more athletic ability. In a few years Porter could easily be a major contributor and throw down some Mike Mo style dunks

I don't think trying to make Marko a low post player would work. The idea brings back bad memories of when Coach L tried to make Vlad Moldoveanu an inside player. And we all remember how that idea crashed and burned. Those European dudes like to play farther away from the basket and jack up 3's.

Marko plays around the basket a lot. He has the ability to back players into the basket and get his hook shot off. His game is very different than Vlad's

And he also loves taking 3's. My guess is that he would prefer roaming the perimeter with an occasional inside move. But from what I have seen the last 2 years, his strength is NOT as a post player.

I don't really see that in his game. He's more comfortable in the high or low post, not "hanging out" on the perimeter.

As for taking 3s I have no problem with our center popping out for a 3 or trailing a fast break for a drive a dish 3, but the way I see it, the majority of our forwards need to be planted in the post they just don't have the quickness and handle to be perimeter players.

The reason he is randomly out there is due to Hewitt's offense, same reason Copes or Jenkins comes out to the perimeter to set a screen or reset the offense. Marko does not just hang around the perimeter, he is mainly under the basket or thereabouts.

Being tall and from Europe doesn't automatically make you Vlad Moldoveanu.

Oh, I see. I didn't recognize the movement of our players on the court when we have the ball as some type of actual offensive scheme. I stand corrected. But Marko is not and never will be a low post player as his primary area of contribution on offense. Don't get me wrong. I like him as a player. I just view him more as a "3" than a "4" or "5."

Nobody said he is strictly a low post, back to the basket player or a 5. But he is down toward the hoop alot more than he is out "hanging" on the perimeter. I think a 3 or 4 would be about what he is.

My whole suggestion for Marko was predicated on a board-wide consensus that we would like to see Porter red-shirt this upcoming season. So in that scenario who is best to give us minutes at the 5 when Copes isn't on the floor? Between Royals, Jenkins, and Marko I think a beefed up Marko would be our best option.

I think it'll be his best bet to get more minutes as well with Royal becoming eligible.

But my suggestion is also based on an assumption that Jenkins will continue to play the 4 with Royal. I don't know how Hewitt will see his roster, considering we have a lot of 3/4 types (Jenkins, Royal, Marko, Lockett and Mayimba and that doesn't count Gray and Jackson who are 2/3 guys -- or if you want to believe Jackson as a 1/3 guy).

From what I can gather, Hewitt thinks Mayimba can play the 2, but who knows.

Will Jenkins or Royal start at the 3? Will he play Royal at the 5? Will he in fact red-shirt Porter as we would like? And if so, who backs up Copes (or starts) at the 5, who takes those minutes when Copes isn't on the floor?

In other words, the roster is kind of a mess at the 3-5 spots, so who knows what roles these guys will have.

You are correct that the roster is a mess at the 3-5 spots. I personally would rather see Jenkins play the 4 or even 5 because he is at his best when he is near the basket. I like the kid but his "handles" are pretty bad and I would much rather see Mayimba/Lockett/Gray/Jackson share the minutes at the 2/3. His energy and aggressiveness would make up for his lack of height. So unless he improves his ball handling (and outside shot) drastically over the offseason I think we are much better off with Copes/Marko/Royal/Jenkins playing the 4 and 5 and if you want to have 3 out of those 4 on the court at the same time..Royal/Marko are more suited to play on the perimeter.

We haven't really had a true center for awhile. We don't really play with a "5" but tend to play with multiple wings and power forwards. Copes may play close to the basket but he really isn't a true center. Very few teams actually have a center. Porter could be a center one day, assuming he gains about 40 pounds.

I'd give my left nut to have a guy like Will Thomas again. We need a legitimate post player...................and a point guard that can shoot.
