2014 Recruiting

Since none of us care about your high school, I'll add the relevant fact that Porter did score 23 points in the game. Way to represent PORTER!

Wow Tom. Salty? Porter was tough early on in the game, but as it wore on, not as much.

Whatever. It's just typical in his typical anti-GMas posts that he has to say something negative about our recruit in a recruiting thread. It's a shame Potomac couldn't pull out the win, but it is nice to see that Porter played well.

Tom. What are you talking about? I stated that they couldn't get it done. They, in fact, did not. Maybe they'll rebound in the state tournament.

See, that wasn't too hard. This is a recruiting thread, so it's just nice to get some feedback on how how they play. The result of the game aside, what can you tell us about his game? Do you think he's an obvious red-shirt candidate, or can he add some weight in the offseason and contribute next season?

Personally, I don't see how he could add enough weight in an off-season and contribute right away. His body will need an opportunity to adjust to the extra mass, if he's able to put it on and keep it on. Obvious red-shirt.

Thanks for the insight. Sorry if I was salty, but getting any info on our recruits has been like pulling teeth this year.

While I tend to agree, it could be an interesting decision for all parties involved.

No worries Tom. You're one of the best educated posters on these boards. While a fan, you don't let that clould your judgment.

I'm sure part of that decision will be based on the staff's assessment of Julian Royal's ability to contribute, too.

With how awful and inconsistent Copes and Marko are, Porter might have to play right away out of necessity.

Not disagreeing with your assessment, but IMHO, barring a miracle next season is already a wash ... so why burn a year of eligibility for a kid who could turn out to be a very good player with time and added weight?

Yea true, I agree with you when you look at it from that standpoint. Sucks that next season is basically already a wash. I guess the staff should try for a JUCO big. That 7 footer would be a good start...if he actually enjoys getting rebounds, making point blank layups, and dunking.

I agree with you. But, will Porter and his parents be in favor of redshirting (hopefully, like Jalen Jenkins and his mother, they will)?
Secondly, how secure is Hewitt in his status that he would be willing to redshirt Porter in Hewitt's 4th season?

Maybe someone could anonymously send him that article about how bigs take longer to develop in college/the pros and how most would benefit from a red-shirt.

Honestly, I can't see Porter's decision significantly affecting Hewitt's status one way or the other -- except for the following fact:

Hewitt must know by now that he's gonna have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to win enough games next season to keep his job for year 5 and beyond. I highly doubt that a rail-thin 6-10 kid is going to play significant minutes for a coach in that situation; if he does, that likely means our roster has been ravaged by injury, suspension or some other foolishness.

So that may make it easier for Hewitt to sell Porter on the redshirt. If Porter realizes that he's not going to play much other than garbage minutes, hopefully he and his people will be smart enough to save that year of eligibility for the back end of his career.
