It's why I said high school stats don't mean diddly. Way too many variables, especially level of competition and surrounding talent, to judge whether a kid will be a contributor on the next level.

And, I guess that you can also say the same about ESPN's rankings of H.S. prospects:

Anali Okoloji - Ranked #75 small forward in the class of 2009 by ESPN.com
Erik Copes - Rated the 6th best center & the 56th-best prospect overall by ESPNU.
Corey Edwards - Ranked the #56 PG prospect in the nation by ESPN.com
Vaughn Gray - Ranked the 53rd small forward prospect nationally by ESPN.com
Johnny Williams - Rated 36th in the nation at PF by ESPN.com.

Kind of like the "Jewish Jordan" Tamir Goodman. That kid sucked, but found a way to get a scholly to UMD (obviously that was a PR move) by jacking up tons of shots and shooting an extremely low percentage, but avg. a lot of pts.

Can you imagine if you had a team where these five guys were your best players? You wouldn't win a single game.

ESPN is usually very good with about the top 50 kids nationally because they get to see those kids a ton at big-time events.

Beyond that, I wouldn't give you a plug nickel for their HS player evaluations, or anybody else's for that matter.

It's just basically impossible to predict what a teenager, no matter how talented, is going to become. Any parents who have a teenage boy like I do knows that getting them to work hard and fulfill their potential can be a major chore.

GIVING DAY 2023
Because they apparently never saw him play until his senior year of HS (when he wasn't the best PG on his team and ceded the position to a better player), ESPN was unaware that Marquise Moore had played PG his first three years of high school and claimed in a scouting report that he only began playing the point during his year of prep school.

ESPN scouting reports are not where accuracy lives.

This is true, but if we landed a 4 star recruit we would be ecstatic. I tell myself those stars mean nothing but at the end of the day, everybody gets cised over 4-5 stars and top 100 player rankings.

The same way everybody gets "cised" when the Skins land some "amazing talent" in the draft way later than expected and hes going to be the next star?

See: Jarvis Jenkins, Bacarri Rambo

I mean I guess, if you're stating that skins fans get excited over projected "amazing talent," then yes we do get cised.

I was leaning more towards, we kind of all know the rankings are bullsh*t, but it's still an ego boost to the program and the fans when you land 4-5 star recruits.

I'm not sure why you constantly single out Redskins fans, pretty much every fan of every sports team overvalues who is coming in (and please don't give me a load of crap that 49ers fans don't, because you know they do).

I know it's because you live in Washington and you can't stand to listen to sports radio there, but believe me, it's that bad pretty much everywhere you go in the country. And eventually they're going to be right and the cycle of hope will reset itself all over again -- Alfred Morris is a good example.

Every team has its loonies and out of touch fans and sure its amplified because Im here currently, but Skins fans as a majority are by a good margin the most delusional, unrealistic and irrational fans that I have come across. Not saying they all are that way, but alot that I hear on the radio, in the office, my friends etc are. I suppose its all a fan has left when you have been on par with the Cleveland Browns in regards to being run and production. (Insert mandatory 49ers were bad for almost a decade comment)

Im not talking about the general hope and excitement about certain players from the draft or FA.....every team does have that. But this goes beyond it. How I had to listen to how Jarvis Jenkins was essentially a 1st rounder that you guys were getting back, and how amazing he was in camp that year before he got hurt and hes going to be a difference maker.....or how much of a steal it was to snag Bacarri Rambo in the 6th round and how he was a 2-3 round talent and you stole him in the 6th.....Hankerson was going to be a legit deep threat......Brandon Banks the next Devin Hester.....How it was highway robbery to steal the "HOF" Donovan Mcnabb.......How Albert Haynesworth was going to be all world after you backed the brinks truck up....and on and on and on. I still remember this gem like it was yesterday, when somebody criticized the hiring of Shanny saying what has he done since Elway.....the profound caller said, "well what has Elway done since Shannahan?!"...........

Part of it is that you earn some leeway and respect when you are drafting guys and they are turning into all league players, but when you have such a horrible resume at drafting and signing FAs for soo long....it just turns into the boy who cried wolf every single time. Basically I single out skins fans reactions and silly statements, because they single themselves out.

Excellent post, but be careful. Skin Fan just won't allow this kind of "real" talk about their team. Haven't played in a NFC Championship Game since Jan. 1992. Not sure how that's even possible. And don't even bring up the Bullets. The most insignificant major Pro Sports Franchise the last 35 years.

The question you have to ask yourself P49 is would you rather a delusional fanbase of people who keep going to games and supporting the team with fervor despite the horrible record or a fanbase entirely comprised of PMPs?

Its not one or the other nor are they really related. As you see in certain cases even the most stout fans can waver on attendance etc.... as year after year goes by and not competing or the FO/AD continually botching things.

You can be a fan of a losing team without needing to be completely delusional and offbase about everything. Trust me, in the "glory years" the Niners had during my teenage years watching the likes of JT O Sullivan, Shaun Hill, Tim Rattay or Ken Dorsey under center, Dennis Erickson coach and the void of talent early years of Alex Smith.....its almost like a patch of honor to root for a terrible team and know you are bad.

Please keep the discussion on track, guys. I don't come here to read about the NFL.

Thank you, Mr Biggs.

P49 - You have plenty of solid/good basketball posts, but the NFL posts are awful. You know what's more annoying than homers being homers and bandwagon jumpers jumping on bandwagons? An out of market fan lecturing. If vcu fan was on here telling us their freshmen are better than ours, but their's just don't get the minutes --- I couldn't care less whether he's right or not, I, and I hope all of us, would just want to see him get kicked in the nuts.

I hear you, I know its been tough times in Washington and local fans dont like criticism. Was just saying....hang in there though, maybe one day they will rise from the depths of the league....maybe one day.

Does anyone like criticism (don't answer, rhetorical question)?

I have hope, whether founded or not, that the Skins are finally operating like a good franchise. The Danny has stepped away from active involvement. The head coach is young, energetic, enthusiastic, and seems well-qualified. Unlike with Shanny, the HC does not have ultimate decision power over personnel. That is the GM's responsibility and he has indicated that it will be collaborative with his three top execs, Scott Campbell, Morocco Brown, and now Doug Williams.

But my hope has been misplaced and my heart broken so many times in the last 21 years, that I am probably wrong again.
