Dane Fischer is 5-0 in the CAA. Having a good start to his head coaching career down in Williamsburg.

W&M won again and is now 6-0 in the CAA, already having won 4 away games, including a 27 pt win at Hofstra, current second place team in the conference. Could this be the year they make the NCAAs?

Big if, but if....Dane wins it all this year, talk about a potential legend in Williamsburg. He will assuredly get a multi-year contract extension this year if they win it all....He literally had to turn over half of their roster, albeit with the return of Knight and Van Vliet. Gotta give him a ton of credit.

Trivia question: William and Mary is one of the 4 original D-I schools that have never played in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. One of the 4 schools was offered a bid to the tourney, but turned it down. Name that school?

You are correct! Knight believed that Army had a better chance of winning the NIT, so he rejected the NCAA bid. Army went on to lose to Notre Dame in the 1st round of the NIT, and finished the season 20-5.

Was this back when the NIT actually still had some cache?

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/03/ar...yzewski-bob-knight-coach-k-never-made-5-teams:

"Like all old stories, there are a number of explanations and it’s tough to know exactly what to believe. Most importantly, the landscape of college basketball was far different back then. The NCAA tournament wasn’t the juggernaut it was today and refusing a bid was common in the 1940s and 50s. But by the 1960s, the NCAAs seemed to be the goal of most, with a few exceptions. So why did Knight pass on the chance to play in what was then the Not So Big Dance?

In his book, Last Dance: Behind the Scenes at the Final Four, John Feinstein wrote that Knight refused the NCAA invitation because he felt the Black Knights had a better chance of winning the NIT, as Lew Alcindor and UCLA were playing in the NCAAs. (Knight was right about the Bruins winning the title, of course.) Plus, Madison Square Garden was closer to West Point (about 60 minutes away) than wherever the NCAA would have shipped the Cadets and the team wanted its Corps of Cadets to be part of the action. And the NIT had been something of a boon to Army in the 1960s, with the team making the tournament seven times in 10 years, including four of Knight’s five seasons at the helm.

After Knight left, the team suffered through horrible losing years, including a 3-22 mark in 1975 that led to the hiring of that Polish point guard with the name that was tough to spell. In his third season, Mike Krzyzewski led Army to its last 20-win season. In his fourth season, the team made its final postseason appearance. Despite going out with a losing 9-17 record in 1980, Krzyzewski was hired by Duke. The rest is history.

The irony is that the 1968 NIT didn’t work out well for Army. Bob Kinney, the sports information director at Army, described why. 'We were the first team picked to play in the NIT in 1968,' he said. 'We drew Notre Dame on St. Patrick’s eve night, with two Irish officials, and lost by four in the opening round. All of that is factual.'"

As a Penn State student, I watched Knight's Army teams play at Rec Hall.

I've been hammering DP as much as the next guy but this seems like a reach.....had he signed this kid he would have been given shit for being this kids only offer. Giving Jack a scholarship for a semester has nothing to do with this kid not coming to Mason.

Also, fair to pt. out if Frumpy Dave had signed him, Papas wouldn't have have done shit at G Mas as there would have been zero development and/or he would have been used incorrectly/inconsistently.

Before we go crazy over Papas, he currently is shooting 31.9% from 3 for the year. That's only marginally better than Mason's poor 30.7% and lower than 33.3% Div 1 average.

Oh, and that dunk over Kansas came in a 55 pt loss.

It was hilarious though. Guy was dribbling it out and he stole it, dunked it, and screamed I don’t give a F—-
