During his nine years at the helm, the Philadelphia native amassed a record of 142-105 while also serving as a professor in the English department. Westhead led the Explorers to two NCAA tournaments and an NIT while leading La Salle to seven winning seasons.

Westhead parlayed his time at 20th and Olney into a long and successful career in professional basketball, highlighted by his leading the Showtime Lakers, featuring Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, to the 1980 NBA championship. He would go on to coach for six NBA franchises, as well as several college and WNBA teams in over 40 years in the profession."
