"But life is different now. Strange yet familiar. Johnson is in his fifth year of college, now at Southern Illinois, and he is one of the top scorers in Division I men’s college basketball. He is playing with the freedom and confidence he had in high school. But the stats? They’re even better now. Entering Sunday’s regular season finale against Northern Iowa, the 23-year-old is averaging 21.9 points, good for fourth in the country."

"His transformation started in the transfer portal. Johnson, a D.C.-area native, enjoyed playing close to home at George Mason. But one year after a coaching change, he and the Patriots’ staff agreed it would be best to part ways. He entered the portal with two years of eligibility remaining, unsure what to expect.

Ultimately, it felt like getting recruited all over again — minus some of the excitement. It still felt nice to be pursued, but Johnson approached things more carefully this time around. He was less innocent and more world-weary."

"More than anything, he just wanted to feel comfortable. Southern Illinois (19-11) contacted him right away, offering to visit Johnson and his family in Florida. There was a connection with the Salukis: SIU assistant Brendan Mullins, older brother of Coach Bryan Mullins, had recruited him out of high school. Now the team needed a point guard, and Johnson needed a new place to play. Both sides liked the fit."

"That confidence has trickled down to every aspect of his game. He remains a dogged defender, but he’s averaging 3.4 more assists per game than last season, and his free throw percentage is up more than 15 percent."

Happy for XJ too - he looks like hes dropped some weight and put it all together after being a 7ppg scorer for his first four years.

The Missouri Valley is a smidge below the A10 at #9 in the RPI ratings this year, and I suspect the small drop in level also helped him out a ton. Glad to see him succeeding.

"WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University's NCAA Tournament run concluded on Saturday evening in a tense high-level battle between the Cardinals and the Profs of Rowan. Rowan picked up an 89-85 victory over the Cardinals to advance to the Sweet Sixteen next weekend.

Rowan and Catholic put on a show in front of a sellout crowd of more than 1,100 fans inside the DuFour Center on Saturday. Tommy Kelly, Jake Timby, and Enzo Sechi all scored 17 points for Catholic, but the Cardinals couldn't overcome the performance from the Rowan trio of Marcellus Ross, Khalif Meares, and Ja'Zere Noel. Ross scored 31 to lead the group as they combined for 74 of the team's 89 points in the victory.

Aaron Kelly's Cardinals trailed by 10 at halftime, but were within a bucket as late as the 3:35 mark of the second half after a pair of Jesse Hafemeister free throws. Catholic outscored Rowan 52-46 in the second half, but the Profs continued to hit key shots to hold the rally at bay."

  • "25 wins for Catholic is the most in over a decade, matching the 2012-13 team."

William and Mary have parted ways with Dane Fischer

"Fischer took over in 2019 for Tony Shaver, who had finished above .500 in CAA play in six straight seasons before his ousting. The first-year head coach carried over that momentum into the 2019-20 season, leading the Tribe to a second-place finish in the CAA standings, going 21-11 overall and 13-5 in the league.

It has gone downhill from there, however. William & Mary has gone 19-45 in CAA play over the past four seasons, failing to finish better than seventh in the league."

"Robert Morris University Vice President and Director of Athletics Chris King has announced Chandler McCabe as the next head coach of the Colonials’ women’s basketball team. The seventh head coach in the 48-year history of the Division I program, McCabe will be formally introduced on Tuesday, March 19 at 11 a.m. in the UPMC Events Center’s Harshman Family Rotunda.

McCabe joins RMU after spending the 2023-24 season at University of Central Florida (UCF) in its first season in the Big 12 as an assistant to head coach Sytia Messer.

Prior to UCF, the Orlando native spent two seasons as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at George Mason under head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis. In 2022-23, McCabe helped lead the program to its first winning season in 17 years and first .500 record in Atlantic 10 Conference play.

McCabe spent seven seasons under Blair-Lewis as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Bethune-Cookman."

Was this the guy who seemed to be the one in charge of things for many of the (early) parts of their times out?

"ALLENDALE, Mich.— Drury's season and Kaci Bailey's first campaign as the head coach of the Lady Panthers came to an end on Friday as number one ranked Ashland advanced to the second round of the NCAA-II Tournament with a 102-65 win in Allendale, Michigan.

After two seasons as head coach at Quincy, Bailey arrived at Drury, inherited a roster with no returning starters and only six players, then guided the Lady Panthers to 25 wins and the program's 21st national tournament bid in 24 years. Drury ended the season 25-7, while Ashland moves to the next round with a record of 31-1.

The Eagles, the defending Division II national champions who have won 68 of their last 69 games dating back to last year, smothered Drury early and started the game with a 16-0 lead before the Lady Panthers got on the board with 3:38 remaining in the first quarter. Ashland built a 44-20 lead at halftime, then Drury found their offense to start the third period.

Drury scored 22 points in the third quarter and pulled with 19 late in the period, but Ashland ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to put the contest out of reach."

Kaci Bailey is a former Mason assistant.

Here's a picture of Ms. Chandler McCabe -

Thanks, but clearly not the person that I was thinking of. I misread the article and thought that McCabe was with us during the current season.

Andre Bolton apparently is the coach that I noticed. Should have read it more carefully and looked up the pictures on gomason before writing anything.
