Tyler Kolek, Marquette (2024 Round 2, Pick 34 by the Portland Trail Blazers and traded to the NY Knicks) is the highest NBA draft pick for a former Mason player. Interestingly, the 2 former Mason players drafted highest in the NBA were recruited by Dave Paulsen.

Demetrius Somerville was a recent recipient of a privately funded grant of $3,000 for people leaving incarceration. He spoke at the Colorado State Capitol on Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, in support of a measure to provide similar grants from public dollars for thousands more people leaving jail or prison. (Andrew Kenney/CPR News)

"Somerville once had a promising college basketball career at George Mason University, but it was derailed by an injury and he later became involved in drug trafficking. In the decades since, he was incarcerated several times, including a seven-year federal prison term on drug charges and, more recently, a stint in jail for alleged violation of a restraining order stemming from a domestic dispute, he said.

Upon his release, he started working on a highway trash-cleaning crew through CEO. At the same time, he qualified for up to $3,000 from the prototype version of the reentry grant. He’s hopeful the extra money will help him break the cycle of recidivism.

'I was able to buy a car and that opened up a lot of doors for me,' he said. 'I was able to be there for my kids, seek more gainful employment, and also hopefully find a better job and get to that job.'

The nonprofit’s pilot program only has enough funding to serve about 100 people. If the state bill passes, it would provide tens of millions of dollars in funding to offer similar grants to thousands of people."

"He graduated from Delaware State in 2012 and it's his 12th season as a pro player. He also played for George Mason University for one year."

Mason great Mouhamed Mbaye selected first overall in the draft!

The China draft

"Foreign basketball players protest draft decision they say is ‘discriminatory’

  • Staff writer, with CNA

As eight basketball-playing international students appealed to the Taiwanese basketball industry after they were excluded from the draft of an upcoming new league merging the P.League+ and the T1 League, the new league’s preparatory committee spokesperson Chang Shu-jen (張樹人) yesterday said the committee would tomorrow discuss the supplementary measures and whether the international students can join the draft.

The students on Tuesday called for support on their right to play in the upcoming new league, after a merger involving the two leagues impacted their eligibility for the draft.

The international players from the University Basketball Association (UBA), led by first pick prospect Mouhamed Lamine Mbaye of National Chengchi University, issued a joint statement in Chinese one day after the P.League+ and the T1 League announced their decision to exclude them from the draft, which is scheduled to take place on July 15.

The decision came as part of ongoing discussions to flesh out the rules for the new league.

The two leagues said they excluded international students from the draft because the new league does not expect the students to 'effectively elevate the competitiveness of Taiwan basketball on the international stage.'

Emphasizing that they followed the registration procedures for the P.League+ draft, the eight players said they never expected to be informed of their exclusion from the draft two days before the combine — a trial session —, in which they still plan to participate.

'It’s hard for us to accept the new league’s decision,' they said, adding that the remark that international students cannot effectively contribute to improving Taiwan’s competitiveness in basketball is “unconvincing” and “lacking evidence,” and might even be “discriminatory.'

The eight students in their joint statement said that they had all been looking forward to the P.League+ draft, and their families have spent large sums of money to fly to Taiwan to support them.

'Is our dream shattered in Taiwan now? Or is there still any room for a turnaround?' the eight students asked in their statement."

"The two leagues issued a response to the international students’ statement on Tuesday night, reiterating that the preparatory committee for the new league made the decision to bring Taiwan in line with other pro leagues in Asia.

It said that the decision was made in accordance with Taiwan’s laws, and the new league’s rules and regulations, which have not been made public.

The committee offered an apology to the international students for introducing the rule change, saying it hopes they would continue to thrive in Taiwan and hopefully play in the nation’s pro league as international players."

First Team All-CAA and CAA All-Defensive Team Tricia "Trish" Halpin (1996-2000) was the most prolific shot blocker in Mason history (236 career blocked shots) and one of the best in the country during her career. I believe that she still holds all the shot blocking records for Mason women's basketball. After playing professionally in Germany, she became a nurse. Currently, she works for Nurse-Family Partnership helping underprivileged first-time mothers - https://www.nursefamilypartnership.org/

Her oldest child, Maurice "Reece" Craft is a 6'6" power forward and rising senior at 2024 PIAA Class 3A state champion Devon Prep. He was voted by the Pennsylvania sports writers to the 2023-24 All-State Class 3A Third Team - https://www.pottsmerc.com/2024/04/2...unce-2023-24-all-state-boys-basketball-teams/

Devon Prep is a member school of the Philadelphia Catholic League, This is the same league that Trish Halpin was First Team All-Catholic at powerhouse Cardinal O'Hara High School (Springfield, PA) - https://tedsilary.com/linusmcginty.htm

"Reece Craft (2025 | Devon Prep)
Indeed a powerful forward, Craft was dominant on the offensive boards and when he attacked going to his left. When he wasn't boxing out then tipping the ball back out to a teammate, he was grabbing it and putting it back himself. The 6-6 big man put opposing forwards and guards in the spin cycle with his quick footwork in the post. And when he caught the ball on the perimeter, he showed the touch to knock down the corner three and, depending on the matchup, the agility to attack the basket off-the-bounce. Schools across multiple levels were there to witness Craft racking up double-doubles."
