All the best to Troy, sorry to hear that he is leaving but I hope he does well. I am not sure what his role would have been going forward, but I always enjoyed seeing his energy on the bench and hoped he would develop into something under Paulsen's eye.

On a lighter note, Brad Edwards if you are reading this, why isn't there a release on gomason.com and why is he still listed on the roster?

Skill wise he wasnt much of an asset. Great kid and I hope he crushes it in Juco.

The athletic talent was def there for Troy but what he really needs is playing time and experience. Smart move going to Palm Beach, looking at their roaster he'll be their biggest player so he should be their stating center. They were like 24-6 last season also. Setting it up this way Troy can make his way back to D1 in 2018 without sitting a year.

Coupled with Paulsen's embrace of small ball, I'd guess. Four players battling for the same 40 minutes a game.

I thought once we got Calixte and Reuter, we might see some more double post offense at times, but it sounds like Paulsen is all in on the 4 guard lineup.

Looks like Troy did the math and realized he was better off going somewhere he can play right away and develop his game.

Don't blame him for not wanting to burn a second year of eligibility at Mason with no guarantee of playing time. Plus, his brother has done well for himself as a JUCO and Troy will have an opportunity to market himself to other D-I programs without having to redshirt. Overall a smart decision.

While the timing is curious, a transfer from one of the bigs became all but inevitable with the additions of Calixte and Reuter.

But I don't think it means Dave is all in on 4 guards as our default lineup, unless you are counting Wilson and Mar as guards.

It's tough for me to see a lineup with either Mar or AJ at the 5. Both guys are like ~200lbs wet. Imagine if either one had to guard Holloway from UMass.

No I wouldn't expect to see AJ guarding Holloway either. Even Relvao and Calixte will have their hands full with that beast.

Fortunately most teams don't have a 6-11, 300-pound aircraft carrier in the middle.

AJ and Mar are going to be paired up front in some lineups. Along with three guards, they give us by far our most athletic, versatile group on both ends of the floor.

Boyd played the 5 for us some last season, so who knows.

By the way, I consider Mar and AJ both of the G/F persuasion (college speak for small forward) and not a traditional power forward of the double post offense kind of system.

Agreed. However, the thought might prevail that the coaching staff were pointedly holding a scholarship for the 2018 class. Either way, I don't think we would've gotten anyone more ready to contribute to the team's success this year than Troy.

Losing two players right before the season is terrible for our depth this year (especially in practice), regardless of people's opinions of the the players leaving. It might pay dividends down the road if Dave is able to lure better players with those two spots, but I think we definitely took a step back this season, especially with Newman leaving.

newman really started to shine by the end of the season. He learned to not immediatly take the three. His pump fake and drive to the hoop was dangerous.
