Preferred Walk-On
After the game, Otis went over to Doc Nix and gave him a hug....then he slapped the hand of every band member in the first row. It didn;t seem like he was ordered to do so as he was really the only one to make that gesture. Point being he seems like a really good dude on top of looking like a building block for years to come!

The kid is a leader. In Otis, I trust!! Take us back to the promised land.

If we can bring someone in who is a stud anchor down low for next season...we could be a contender every single night.

We have Relvao on the roster right now, but he might be more of a stretch 4 type then a low post player. Dixon has the instincts of a low post player, but he's not strong enough yet to give us any real minutes there. Give him another 20-25 pounds in the offseason and he might be our answer d0wn low. I think Jenkins might actually benefit from being closer to the basket, I could see a scenario where he's starting there his senior season.

Still, we are most likely two years away given our inexperience and roster turnover.

I think I heard on radio that Otis' father is on the Ravens' telecast today. The Espn radio (980) guys--Steve Czaban, Chris Cooley--mentioned in passing that they didn't know who OL I was. Naturally they didn't mention the connection to Mason.

GIVING DAY 2023
Congrats to Otis, who picks up his first A-10 Rookie of the Week award and Mason's 4th this season.

At this point, he has to be a prohibitive favorite for Rookie of the Year. While Grayer and Abram have had bigger scoring games, Livingston has been unbelievably consistent for a freshman playing the most demanding position on the court.

How consistent? Here are his per-game scoring totals:

8, 17, 10, 9, 11, 7, 14, 10, 12, 13, 9, 12, 11, 11, 11, 11

That's 12 out of 16 games in double figures, plus 2 other games with 9 points.

His low for the season has been 7.

He also has a 46:29 assist-to-turnover ratio, which is pretty damn strong when you consider 8 of his turnovers came in that one nightmare game at Manhattan. Eliminate that outlier and he's averaging only about 1.5 TOs per contest.

The kid is a flat-out stud. Frankly, there's nobody on any other conference team that's even close.

I hope he's one of the guys who is "obsessed with becoming a better shooter" as Paulsen said after the Bonnies game. He can be a real anchor for us moving forward if we can get some more consistent shooters around him.

Joseph Chartouny (Fordham) might beg to disagree - but he's missed the last 3 games with injury.

No offense to Chartouny, but his stats have been bolstered by the fact that Fordham plays fast, played a terrible OOC schedule and he has several teammates who can really score.

He's also had the luxury of merely being a facilitator, not having to carry the load of being a primary scoring option for a team that struggles to shoot the ball.

Put Otis alongside Mandell Thomas, Ryan Rhoomes and Christian Sengfelder, and he'd average 8 assists a game without breaking a sweat.

What's even more remarkable about Otis is that midway through his senior season, he still didn't have a commitable D-I offer. Prior to signing with Mason, his best offer was from Robert Morris.

Coaches who are responsible for scouting the NY/NJ area seriously screwed the pooch by not offering this kid, and we should feel thankful they did. He never should've been available for DP to sign him so late in the process.

Just goes to show that you can't accurately judge the quality of an incoming recruit by his other offers. Kids do still fall through the cracks for whatever reason.

Otis also played at a very highly-regarded public school hoops program in NJ (Linden) for a well-respected coach (Phil Colicchio). He was the best player on a team that won the Union County championship.

I too am amazed that he did not have more offers and that DP and his staff were able to recruit him to Mason.

As I think I mentioned in a previous thread, when DP became the coach at Williams, he started a freshman at PG. That player started all four years for DP at Williams, he was an All American and a key player on DP's team that won the D3 Nat'l Championship. I would love to see Otis have similar success. :)
