GIVING DAY 2023
At the A10 Media Day, Chris DiSano asked Coach Paulsen about Shevon Thompson & then Jalen Jenkins. Then, DiSano asked if there was an X-factor in the backcourt. Coach Paulsen responded that it was Marquise Moore, who he believes could be an elite defender.

I'm all for competition. But, I can't imagine Marquise not being the primary PG for the remainder of his career particularly if he's healthy.

I am probably the biggest Marquise fan on this board so you don't have to sell me.

I do think DP's quote about Otis starting was intended to light a fire under Marquise, who has the ability to be the top PG in the league but has to adapt his game to a completely different style and philosophy.

I also know this much: If Otis is performing better by the season opener, Paulsen won't hesitate to start him. Bucknell started three freshmen last season and won the Patriot League regular season.

Good stuff. I listened to the Paulsen interview but missed the name of the player he was talking about being an elite defender. Something that is often overlooked in sports, especially college, is having competition at positions to push the starters to work harder. Hopefully we start to get some of that.

By George.

Starter
That's a really surprising comment by Paulsen, I wonder how directly that is related to Marquise or if Paulsen was just saying Otis would have to be in the lineup. I think we have all assumed Marquise is pretty locked in at PG, maybe they will both play together?

If we go small it would be Moore, Otis, Holloway, Jenkins and Shevon. If we go big, sub out Otis for Marko.

No chance they continue the Marko/JJ at the 3 experiment.

I also know this much: If Otis is performing better by the season opener, Paulsen won't hesitate to start him. Bucknell started three freshmen last season and won the Patriot League regular season.

When Paulsen decides who is starting, his decision is usually determined mostly by defense. Of the three freshmen you mention, one of them rarely played in December and didn't get his first start until mid-January (Stephen Brown). The other one (Zach Thomas) didn't get a start until mid-February, and played almost no minutes at all until mid-January.

As for history, Mike Muscala, who I'm sure you know now plays for the Hawks, didn't start even one game until mid-January of his freshman year - even though he was good enough to make 2nd team All-PL as a frosh. And the next year, Cameron Ayers, who later would become the league's POY and who had a good season in the D League last year, didn't even get one start. Both Ayers and Muscala did see time off the bench - but their minutes were limited by their defense. A more extreme example is Chris Hass, who was All-PL last year as a junior. Hass played exactly 47 minutes for the entire season his freshman year - even though the players all said that no-one could guard him in practice.

For all of those players, their playing time was determined by learning exactly what Paulsen wanted on defense. No matter how good they were offensively - and all of the ones mentioned above were very good at that end as frosh - they got virtually no minutes until they knew exactly when he wanted help and exactly how he wanted it done. Beyond knowing when to help, he abhors switching and he abhors going under a screen, no matter who the guy is with the ball.

Thanks for the inside info. Glad to hear how committed Paulsen is to defense first. GMU's quite thin in the backcourt, so it appears likely that at least one freshman is going to get a lot of PT this year.

That correlation of defense to playing time sounds an awful lot like one Jim Larranaga...

Thanks! They're getting valuable minutes right off the bat. Hopefully that bodes well for now as well as the future.
