It’s been a nightmare for 10+ years since. English was a breath of fresh air. Under Hewitt and Paulsen never felt like they were going anywhere. Paulsen was as boring and lame as humanly possible.
Very true and maybe, I'm blinded by nostalgia, but if this does occur, it just seems like the perfect time to go back to the glory years in search of future glory. You want to rally a fan base? Go get one of us.

Only call they can make is Skinn. Making a 5 year commitment to an unproven coach without an ad spells nightmare. Mason will never get a proven coach who gets it, can recruit and win they cost too much. It’s going to always sort of be a gamble unfortunately. I’m willing to gamble on Skinn not another dude who doesn’t identify with young basketball players or anyone for that matter.

And you'd also be taking a gamble on a guy who has had multiple P5 assistant jobs at successful programs. A known recruiter who knows your recruiting landscape and is not an "outsider". There's something to be said for always trying to get the best candidate and not just hiring a guy because he has ties to the program, but we've almost gone the other way. Looking for reasons not to hire one of our own. Well, none of that has worked out for one reason or another, so why not go back to that well?

The Georgetown and Ewing failed experiment might scare Skinn away from Mason. Why risk tarnishing your legacy.

Well if skinn says no, then it may be a case of hiring someone on a 1 year interim basis to just be able to field a team next year. Without an ad I really don’t think they can run the risk of the next 5 years finishing dead last every season in the A10. That may be it for the A10 if it’s 5 straight last place finishes. At least with skinn fans won’t completely leave. It’s a very critical point, because 5 years of utter failure and it’s over. The program very well could be in a situation where they have to beg someone like the caa to take them back.

It failed because Ewing wasn't a good coach. He had been only an NBA assistant and I am quite sure he was an assistant because of legacy vs actual coaching skills. I don't believe he had the right skills or background to coach COLLEGE hoops in this era with all that it entails.

There’s lots of cases of failed coaches who were legends at their schools. Sidney Lowe comes to mind. Would rather not kill program entirely and miss on skinn than another Paulsen and just make it so damn awful everyone just leaves.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Skinn would make a great coach. I just wonder if the recency of Ewing scares him or mason from making a deal.

Also good chance KE stays and this is a mute point.

If Ewing's failure scares Skinn...then he's not prepared to be our head coach.

Skinn either believes he can be a HC no matter the school or doesn't.

Besides...I am not sure destroying your "legacy" as a Mason great really means alot in the end.......

Just going to sit back and let things play out. Losing English does not have the same impact as losing Coach L. Long term coaches are very rare these days so I expect our coaches to be 2 to 3 year experiments

Despite it not looking good, I hope KE stays. At the same time, though Skinn may be the answer - I think there will be plenty of candidates Mason can look at. I just dread Mason losing all their players and going back to total rebuild mode

This is more of my concern. Obviously you can rebuild quickly with the portal, but when you have stuck around for a few years, you already have built out future pipelines and laid a foundation of what you are looking for.

My initial realistic replacements ideas would be Skinn, Mike Lonergan or Pat Kelsey.

I’m not opposed to giving Simpkins a shot either. Jason Williford (uva assistant) also deserves a HC opportunity.

Just from what I can gather to give a practical response-

Simpkins no, Lonergan probably not.

Unfortunately the ship has sailed on Kelsey, hes making 1m at CofC now, which means Mason would probably need to pay him 2m to come to Mason. Thats not happening.

Williford and Skinn are possibilities. Skinn has to be on the short list.

Other names could be like Christian Webster or a Brandin Knight.

No idea CofC was paying him that much. Good for him.

I would be fine with Knight. For some reason it’s been very difficult to be successful at Rutgers, yet Pikiell and staff found a way.

With that said Hofstra just beat Rutgers in the NIT. It won’t be long before Speedy Claxton gets an opportunity for a bigger/better gig.
