OK, the c!ear and simple explanation is here regarding Justin Kier's possible return next season as a recipient of a medical redshirt for this season.

Wikipedia states the basic rules:

...medical redshirt. A hardship waiver may be granted to those athletes who sustain a major injury while appearing in less than 30% of team competitions, nor can they have participated after the midpoint of a season. For the purposes of eligibility, players granted such a waiver are treated as though they did not compete in that season.

Does Justin Kier meet the above criteria?

Season Midpoint – Kier's injury occurred after he played in the LaSalle game, the 15th regular season game. Mason will play a minimum of 32 games, including thier first post season A-10 Tournament opener. If exhibition games count for medical redshirt eligibility, then the numbers are, injured on game 17 of a minimum 34 game season. The logical verdict: Kier did not play past the season's midpoint due to an injury. Therefore, this requirement has been met.

No more than 30% of total games played – Kier made his season debut versus Old Dominion at the Cayman Islands Classic. His last game played was at LaSalle. Kier played in 10 games. Kier does not currently meet this requirement, having played in 31.2% of the season prior to injury (10 games played ÷ 32 games minimum). If Mason advances past its A10 Tournament opening game then that would be 33 games played, making Kier still ineligible for a medical redshirt having played in 30.3% games. The logical verdict: Mason would have to win two post-season games (for a season total of 34 games) in order for Justin Kier to qualify for a medical redshirt. If the team's two exhibition games enter into the calculation then Kier is currently qualified to receive a medical redshirt (10 games played ÷ 34 = 29.4%).

In light of the above logical deliberations, the following question has to be answered: How many games are allowed to be included in the calculation and does this variable include exhibition games? Any way one slices it, 34 games played is the magic number.

Thanks for posting this. The only other thing on the topic I heard was that “Justin is optimistic” and “Brad is not”

I can see him getting his medical redshirt, but playing elsewhere.

If this goes the way I expect it to go, what an absolute shame Justin wasted his last year of eligibility on a few games of a lost season. I get that the coaching and training staff had their early-season blinders on and it looked to them like we might have a good season. In retrospect, they rushed him back before he was ready and let him go too long before yanking him. Absolutely don't blame them for that. I feel bad for everyone involved.

I get your point here and when I first heard of the injury I asked someone (a reporter not AD staff), at media day if they would just consider giving a redshirt. I was told Justin needed to go pro for his personal situation so I suspect that also had something to do with coming back.

I’m obviously not in charge but when I heard of a preseason injury and that they were unsure of his availability to return, that would have screamed “lets play it safe”.

All we can do is hope that he gets the waiver and comes back.

i like how you ended this post. I say put blame on coaches were it should be- and their is a lot- but don't think we can fault anyone hear. Doctors make these decisions and no one really knows sometimes if an injury will flare back up

And AT THE TIME, we were looking to have a nice season.

I am questioning more and more our team doctors and athletic training staff. There seems to be a pretty awful pattern happening in regards to our teams. One of the few things I don’t blame paulsen on. He had kier on a minutes restriction pretty much up until he reinjured himself. Unless he was making kier run suicides in practice this does not fall on Paulsen.

We can't really know for certain, but I do think the second break had something to do with his ankle sprain that he got after coming back. Was that ankle sprain related to pain in his foot from a not as yet healed stress fracture (meaning was he favoring that foot in practice and that caused the sprain) or was it just a freak occurrence?

Can't imagine he didn't watch Grayer this year and at least consider the option

Exactly. While TCU looks more like a NIT team than a NCCAT squad at this pt., Grayer has had a great opp. this season to play big-time college basketball. Very happy for him.

The La Salle game was the 16th regular season game.

This literally changes everything.

I keep hearing the staff isn’t optimistic, and I get that we’re dealing with the NCAA so you never know, but it would appear math is on Justin’s side.

Even if it’s close, I would hope they’d err on the side of accommodating a young man who has been nothing but first class since he stepped on campus.

He deserves to end his career in uniform, not a walking boot.

He definitely did not play more than 30% of the games scheduled. So, the issue should be determined by whether he played in any contest past the midpoint of the regularly scheduled games. As I've indicated, the last regular season game that he played was the 16th game; and IMO there are 32 regularly scheduled games including one A10 tourney game. If I'm correct, then he did not play past the midpoint of the season.

https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/proposalView?id=2029:

"14.2.4.3.4.1 Team Sports. In team sports, the first half of the season is measured by the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first scheduled contest or date of competition of the designated official NCAA championship playing season in the applicable sport or the number of completed contests or dates of competition. In determining if an injury or illness occurs in the first half of the season that concludes with the NCAA championship in a sport with an odd number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition, the injury or illness must have occurred prior to the beginning of the scheduled or completed varsity contest or date of competition that starts the second half of the season that concludes with the NCAA championship (e.g., an injury or illness occurring at any time after the beginning of the scheduled sixth game of an 11-game football schedule would be considered to be after the first half of the institution's season and would not qualify the student-athlete for a hardship waiver)."
