Way too early coaching search (maybe)

Nice! OK, I should clarify that his age or the fact that he has coached here previously should not be taken into account. You should consider his time at Mason as coaching at a school identical to Mason in every regard...

How would you evaluate his record if some other coach had his record.
100% hire him. Can't get much better of a resume.

IMHO age has to be a factor. The closer you get to retirement, the easier it is for other coaches to use it against you on the recruiting trail.

It would definitely be working against us now if L was still here — he’s recruiting so well because the idea of going to college a short car ride from South Beach sells itself.

I would push back on that a little, decades of poor recruiting at Miami contradicts your claim that South Beach sells itself. Coach L is 2 years younger than Coach K and several years younger than Boeheim.

Boeheim’s recruiting has fallen off from an elite level in the last few years and rival coaches are definitely mounting a whisper campaign about his “imminent” retirement. Coincidence?

Also Coach K is the ultimate outlier. He doesn’t recruit, he chooses among the elite prospects who want to play for him. As long as he has a pulse he’s gonna get great players.

Syracuse has never been a program who thrived off of elite recruits... two top ten classes in the past 10 years and one of those classes (Fab Melo class) got him in trouble because he tried to do something he shouldn't have done. Whisper campaigns may be going on but his recruiting has stayed the same... recruiting didn't fall off after his sanctions and smear campaign by the NCAA due to his violations... they stayed on the average...

His best recruiting classes (star wise) always came in years close to those he won natty's or big east titles and that is natural for all of college basketball outside of the blue bloods (Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Arizona, old time Memphis)

Syracuse current roster star totals for scholarship players (tied 5th in ACC in star count with Coach L):
5 star- 1
4 star- 5 (with 2 more signed for next year)
3 star- 1
2 star- 2 (one being Dolejaz who is a pretty damn good contributor)

25th ranked recruiting class in 2019
43rd ranked recruiting class in 2018
38th ranked recruiting class in 2017
17th ranked recruiting class in 2016
15th ranked recruiting class in 2015
38th ranked recruiting class in 2014
8th ranked recruiting class in 2013
43rd ranked recruiting class in 2012
15th ranked recruiting class in 2011
4th ranked recruiting class in 2010 (including infamous Fab Melo RIP who couldn't read or write upon attending Syracuse... this recruiting class was his downfall with sanctions)
100th ranked recruiting class in 2009 (ranked way behind dear GMU)
28th ranked recruiting class in 2008

Since the Mason fan in me is bored with the two week layoff, I have a thought exercise. If we were actually in a coaching search and Larranaga' s name came up, what would your thoughts be? Try not to let love for him that developed during his tenure here/or hate for him leaving us affect your analysis.

What would be your objective opinion of his record and the potential for hiring someone with his record as Mason's next head coach?

I mean L would be a solid hire, for sure. I would take him over Moton and that dude from California, probably over s lot of other names that would get floated out there.

He’s got the name recognition and the success to recruit the area at a pretty high level (we might not be losing out in nearly as many recruiting battles as we do now if he were wearing green and gold again).

Given Pitino's history of scandals, I'm pretty sure he isn't the coach the administration (or I) would want representing Mason.
