Way too early coaching search (maybe)

Taking the most optimistic or favorable view. In current years the A10 is a mid major at best. realisticly its a low major conference.

I mean we aren't the only mid major to do so that's for sure

Non-power 5 schools who have won in the last 30 years: George Washington (2016), Wichita State (2011), Dayton (2010), Tulsa (2001). That’s it. None of those I would qualify as low major teams.

OK the A10 is a fringe mid major at best. The A10 currently ranks as the 14th best conference. The A10 would be considered in the bottom half of basketball conferences if it were to drop two spots.

A, it’s early. And B a sample size of one is not a trend. A low major conference has systemic issues it has to deal with that limit overall conference success. The A10 has none of those things. And some of the struggling programs right now have basketball budgets two and three times what most low majors have to work with. In fact, our basketball budget is over twice that of Vermont’s.

Fair but the creation of the AAC is not good for the A10.

Doesn’t really matter all that much. It’s the same teams just distributed differently (I mean the Big East was getting 8, 9 teams in regularly before they split up).

If the Big East ever decides to go to 12 and poaches St. Louis and Dayton, that would be bad for us, but that’s not going to happen with the AAC.

Jeff Jones-ODU... can recruit kids that look like they aren't in middle school and they play hard and physical for him

And he has made exactly zero NCAAs during his tenure at ODU, despite lucking into Trey Freeman as a hardship transfer and getting both of Bryant Stith’s sons (including BJ as a transfer from Virginia) after hiring him as an assistant.

If we’re gonna fire another coach and start this rebuilding cycle all over again, we’d better do a hell of a lot better than Jeff Jones. Otherwise it’s a big waste of time and money.

Since the Mason fan in me is bored with the two week layoff, I have a thought exercise. If we were actually in a coaching search and Larranaga' s name came up, what would your thoughts be? Try not to let love for him that developed during his tenure here/or hate for him leaving us affect your analysis.

What would be your objective opinion of his record and the potential for hiring someone with his record as Mason's next head coach?

Seriously, just hire Rick Pitino. He will put the program back on the map and leave for a P5 before an investigation is complete. haha

I'm a huge Coach L guy but he is 132 years old now and I would be against it as I definitley don't want his second tenure here to be his swan song. We need an insecure young guy who feels he has something to prove. Letting him go was huge mistake but rehiring him would be a bigger one. The better approach would be to get one of his disciples.

Also, rumors are most of his success at Miami was because he had a connect at Del Boca Vista retirement home:

He had a grandson who was well plugged in to the recruting and AAU circles down there. He won't have that same connection here.

Nice! OK, I should clarify that his age or the fact that he has coached here previously should not be taken into account. You should consider his time at Mason as coaching at a school identical to Mason in every regard...

How would you evaluate his record if some other coach had his record.

Absolutely without a doubt, with all of those caveats (and probably without). Miami is a football school that doesn't even support it's football team, except when they are undefeated and in the top 10. He has created and maintained buzz and support for the program.

L dealt with sanctions when he got there, and again has been dealing with ADIDAS bull shit (one of the perpetrators lied that L wanted money for a player so he could pocket it). The biggest thing you can question him on at Miami is roster management, as he has had a TON of transfers.

But he is recruiting at unheard of levels there and has been more successfell than any other coach they've had since the program was reinstated.

After their current 4 game losing streak, someone started a thread on their boards about letting him go and the guy was almost universally ridiculed and told he was an idiot.
