The Paul Hewitt Thread

It's definitely encouraging that he didn't just bolt after we lost to Fordham. The fact that he is still there to take in the experience and understand what we could have is a great sign. The more that he talks about vcu, the better I feel. It has to motivate him to take whatever steps necessary to make sure we aren't in their shadow athletically — even if it's not as quickly as most people here think it should happen.

The fact that they have more people in Brooklyn than we drew at most of our home games this year should be enough to convince Cabrera that major changes are in order.

I'd be willing to bet that if our president went public with a specific plan to improve our program and make it relevant again, we would have people crawling out of the woodwork to support him with donations.

I just want to see some sign that for once, Mason is serious about doing what it takes to be more than Cinderella.

Im also of the mind Hewitt is kept for next year at least. GMU will chalk this losing year up to"moving to a tougher conference." If Hewitt is struggling next year he will be in the hot seat and another losing season will be the end for him in Fairfax. As an upside I'm looking forward to Davidson joining next season.

I was impressed with Cabrera the other night at UMass Rhodey. Solid drinker and sociable with just about anyone.

vcu. vcu. vcu. We really need a penis envy thread. Frankly I wouldn't take 34-0 right now to be anywhere near being like those clowns.

Saw three pre teen boys in the hotel lobby today with vcu gear. Oh, I knew their parents...one Longwood one Hamden-Sydney.

Bandwagon. Bandwagon.

Well if you're talking about envy then you should talk to El Presidente. He was the one with constant tweets about vcu.

Not a bad thing at all, Tom. Jollay is always ripping people for the vcu comparisons, but in this case it wasn't fans who brought it up. It was our own President.

Yeah, but that just shows the success they've had getting non-alumns and students interested in their program. I'd love to see Mason have success in this area.

Exactly. I would love to have bandwagon fans. The fact that they have better reach in NoVA (I'm assuming you live in the DMV) is a failure on our admin's part.

Not sure you understand the difference between people that bring it up once or twice, especially on their first trip to the A-10 tournament, and people that mention them every other day.

Here is the list of teams I saw that vcu had better fan support than in NYC:

Marquette, Xavier, St. Joseph's, Creighton, Seton Hall, Providence, St. Louis, Richmond, George Mason, Fordham, St. Bonaventure, St. Joseph's, LaSalle, UMass, Rhode Island, Duquesne, DePaul, Villanova, George Washington, Georgetown, Butler.

St. John's might have been about the same. Not sure.

So yes, we need to do a better job, but vcu is on another level now with their bandwagon fans, and its not just because of our administration.

Don't worry, they bandwagoned Richmond in the 80's too. Goes in cycles.

After randomly catching this I am convinced, the man belongs on TV or the radio calling/analyzing games...just not on the sideline.

It's a shame he's not a better coach, because he really is a great representative for our university. He actually went out of his way to bring up the importance of student athletes getting a good education, which is the last thing most people discuss during the NCAAT.

Hewitt reminds me a lot of Matt Brady who is another cerebral guy who had a lot of built in excuses at JMU. But there is something in their character that rubs me the wrong way when they are talking about their players.

"I'm on the recruiting trail so we aren't sitting at home watching the tournament." Sorry coach you had plenty of talent, you just didn't coach them properly.

not only did he not coach properly. But he did a piss poor job with roster management. To think big time recruits were going to come to Mason was a huge mistake on his part. It goes to show you that he needs to recruit those studs in order to hide his issues being an actual coach. This year exposed his x and o problems and one has to wonder how TOC feels about that when he came out and endorsed hewitts in game "coaching".
