UNSURE - but the only thing about this tournament that is better than the NIT may be the financial payout

Our guys gave it their all for three straight nights to win a championship and play in the NCAA Tournament. I am sure whatever disappointment we are feeling, they feel it 10X more. Now they have a short turnaround for a consultation game against a SoCon team. I am not expecting the same intensity we saw in the A10 tournament.

We probably will win, but maybe not.

One thing I know for sure is they deserve our support. If I were still in the area, I would show up to show my support.

Walk-On
One thing I appreciated that Larranaga used to do, and I believe he kicked it up a notch after the NIT wins in 2004.. he started hyping up the conference and other teams in the conference to the media after each game. I believe this helped get us an at large in 2006 and made the Colonial a trendy potential multi bid league until 2012. If a few of the A10 coaches started taking this approach and talked up the conference, I think eventually the media will have no choice but to take notice again and schools like Dayton and GMU won't be snubbed in the future after seasons they had like this year. Then it would be a moot point if we're playing NIT or some other tournament. While the big money and exposure is with the NCAA tourney, I think any post season is a good opportunity for the team.

CTS was doing this big time in the post-game presser yesterday

Billy Lange said it was a joke that Mason wasn’t in the conversation.

The almost direct quote was “any team that’s top 10 in the country in defense should be in the field. It’s a joke if they aren’t.”

i can't say i disagree with our exclusion based on resume/strength of schedule, but they definitely missed out on the makings of a great tourney team. this team is what cinderellas are made of and has a brand of basketball that's fun for any fan to watch

I think part of what he might be saying is the metrics are skewed too in favor of offense?

Under the old RPI system we are 29th, which would be considered an absolute snub.

vcu would be 24
Dayton would be 55 (which would be borderline and probably keep them out, but maybe not considering Texas is 86 in RPI).

Others of note

Loyola 80 (NET 107)
SLU 79 (NET 101)
St Joes 68 (NET 78)
Bona 75 (NET 97)
James Madison 85 (NET 158)
UNC Asheville 103 (NET 192)
Mount St. Marys 123 (NET 236)

Resume starts looking a little different under the old system.

Granted the losses to CMU, ECU, and Duquesne all look worse under the RPI standard, but that’s a lot of top 100 wins left off our balance sheet.

We had the potential to be a really fun tourney team, or one that barely cracked 40 in a very ugly loss.

For those of us out-of-towners, even though the game is on ESPN+, ESPN is sending out commentators to do all the NIT games. We will have Anish Shroff and Brandon Johnson doing the game. I like Anish... should make the game feel more like a national game and less local.

Thanks for sharing - I haven't heard either of those guys call a game. I'm hopeful that they do the research and actually know about the guys they are watching.

What are the economics of this thing?

I assume price is set by NIT as well as GA
when GWU went - seats were GA but there were premium seats offered to some STHs, either courtside or in front of their club room.

$334,080

" The National Invitation Tournament (NIT) is an annual men's college basketball tournament operated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)3. The total payout for participation in the 2023 NIT is $334,08024. Teams receive a unit of $5,220 for each round they reach, and semifinalists receive an extra unit. The NIT's payout pool was $128,000 in 2021. "

2025 has to be more than this

" Essentially, the NIT collects all the revenue and then disburses it to all the NIT participants according to the number of games in which they played. Sources of revenue include: The NIT then reimburses each traveling team for standard coach airfare, one bus + driver, and $120 per diem per person. "
