So Who Is on Our Roster for 2015-2016?

Just guessing. I think Coach Dave likes the "Face up 4" that can shoot it a little bit more than the "I'll catch it in the high post and hesitate on whether to shoot or drive until I move too fast and turn it over" 4.

Hopefully you are wrong. Paulsen may prefer to have a 4 who plays primarily in the high post, but benching one of our best players would be a huge mistake.

Looking back at Marko's career, it seems to be when he gets consistent playing time (20+ min/game) he performs pretty well. He got off to a great start in 2013-14, played lousy in Hawaii (like they all did for the most part) and then got buried by Hewitt because he wasn't a 6'7 slasher. I predict he has the biggest improvement from Hewitt to Paulsen of any guy on this roster in '15-16.

Maybe I'll be completely wrong...but when I watch the offense with Marko on the floor, at least he seemed to have a clue on when to cut, where to pass, etc. Jenkins looked completely lost for a majority of last season.

I also expect Marko to be much more comfortable/effective in DP's system than he was under Hewitt. He was a terrible fit for whatever nonsensical offense we ran for the past 4 years.

That said, Jalen was lost last season because our idiot ex-coach forced him to play away from the basket and do things (i.e., dribble drive) for which his skill set is ill-suited.

Jalen is an ideal 4 in a double low-post system like we ran for years under Larranaga. Given the fact that we don't have much outside shooting, hopefully Paulsen (unlike Hewitt) will be able to devise a game plan to take advantage of our two monsters on the low block.

It's hard for Marko to play 20+ minutes when he picks up 4 cheap fouls in 4 minutes.

I agree he should see a significant jump under Paulsen, but I don't think that means starting. I think it means being the first big man off the bench.

A lot of Jalen's problems seemed to stem from Hewitt jerking him back and forth between the 3 and 4 spots.

As opposed to Jenkins? Check their Per 40 stats and get back to me on which players fouls more often....

Hewitt gave everyone the clap - when it hurts to pee and your netsuke is the size of a grapefruit - playing basketball become problematic.

What I was actually saying is that Marko is very inconsistent in his fouling. I'm sure his average number of fouls is low, because he's had all those 0 or 1 foul games where he plays 20+ minutes. But he also has had a lot of cases where he has 3+ fouls in 10 minutes or less (and some of them have been very cheap fouls, I'm not putting this all on Marko...). I believe his inconsistent playing time is directly caused by his inconsistent ability to stay out of foul trouble.

I just looked at his game logs, and they don't actually support either of our arguments, so I'm going to drop it.

I'll drop it as well.

With the fact that Jenkins averaged 6 fouls per 40 minutes last year.

6.

6.

What does last year have to do with this year? Hewitt's screen switching, high ball pressure, reach-in for the foul defense is gone.

I mean, what I remember from Marko last year vis-a-vis fouls is that he didn't foul too much because he was too busy watching players blow past him on their way to the layup line.

Marko is smart. He got off the court as fast as he could.

While he's shown potential, Jalen has been a key part of 40+ losses the last 2 years, so I wouldn't say he should be guaranteed a starting spot. Yes, he's had horrible coaching, but self-coaching should eventually teach you not to shuffle your feet at the top of the key or leave your feet with no real plan of attack. I hope we see a brand new, determined and fundamentally sound JJ, but if we don't then let's get the young'uns some run and wish Jalen well at ODU next year.
