I know work has kept me away from the boards so I am doing a lot of catching up. But I am confused as hell with all of the recruiting movements, some players leaving, some coming..

Can someone give a concise run down by position and depth?

I'm pretty sure Abram is a SF

"DeAndre Abram (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview High School)
6’7” Guard

The 2015 District 11-5A Offensive Player of the Year, Abram was also tabbed All-Region 2-5A and Team MVP after helping lead Creekview to its first playoff win in 12 years after averaging 16.9 points per game. A 6’7” guard, the Texas native scored a career-high 29 points in December against McKinney and less than a month later hit two triples, including the game-winner at the buzzer, to defeat crosstown rival Carrollton Newman Smith."

Abram is actually listed as a guard on our roster, so I'm pretty sure the coaches view him as a perimeter player -- which is good because he's 6-7 and 180 pounds. Not gonna get much done in the paint as a stick figure.

Also, I don't see any way Dixon winds up playing the center spot. He'll be the backup at PF behind Jenkins next season. Just not strong enough to play the 5, even at 6-10.

I've got Relvao backing up Shevon at center this season, then most likely starting as a sophomore.

Relvao has only been playing three years. Try again.

Shevon hasn't been playing competitive hoops for too much longer than that. Experience is overrated as long as you give the kid a clearly defined role in which he can be successful.

Barring foul trouble, Shevon is playing 30-plus minutes every night anyhow. Relvao can come in and give us 5-8 minutes just with shot-blocking and rebounding. He doesn't have to make the all-freshman team.

If he can't, our backup center is probably Marko. It certainly isn't Dixon.

I respect your opinion Jim, but I'm curious to see them both in action first. From what I've seen on film, Dixon seems like a better bet to start earlier in his career than Big Papa Porch, even at center.

You're strictly looking at the position as if we always have to have a "center" on the court. Positions titles don't matter anymore, Paulsen has done fine without always having a big center in the middle. I'd expect to see more of our best 5-9 guys rotating, no matter the positions, than an extremely raw Portuguese kid just because he's 6'9".

You are correct that positions don't matter, as long as you have guys who are versatile enough to be interchangeable. Do we have that? I don't know.

Also, given the fact that we are most likely not going to be an NCAA/NIT caliber team this season, why wouldn't Paulsen err on the side of playing the young guys and let them develop?

We're in a very interesting spot. Channeling my inner Herm Edwards, you always play to win the game, which probably means relying on our top 8 guys to play most of the minutes. I can see the argument that Paulsen owes it to our older guys to try to win.

At the same time, where will that leave us next season, when we're going to need a bunch of these young guys to step in and play?

FWIW, I seem to recall that DP started three freshmen at Bucknell last season. Perhaps it was as simple as those were his best available options. But he's clearly not averse to playing "extremely raw" young kids.

Given the youth of the team, I expect Paulsen will likely give playing time to as many as possible, especially if we aren't at the level to compete for anything post-season. Better to give everyone some seasoning so that as they develop, they'll have the playing time under their belt

I think the players who earn the time on the court will get the time on the court. And by necessity some of the young players are going to get a lot of that time. For instance, there's 40 minutes at the three up for grabs.

I get that, but it makes me wonder if DP, like many coaches, will give the younger guys (and the guys he has signed) the benefit of the doubt if the competition for playing time is remotely close.

There are 3 spots (C, PF and PG) where veterans are clearly established as the starter, and that's a good thing because Jalen and Marquise will be our senior leaders next season. Very glad we still have them for two more years.

As you pointed out, the SF spot is by necessity going to be filled by a young guy.

What I'm particularly interested to see is if DP thinks the team is better with Holloway coming off the bench as a microwave scorer and decides to start either Grayer or Murrell at SG.

I'm intrigued by Grayer and can see him fitting into a lineup with Shevon, Jalen, Mayimba (please God) and Marquise. Perhaps Murrell starts to give us a perimeter threat. Who knows?

It's amazing, a year ago this time many of us were depressed, sad, angry, etc. Now DP has us all cautiously optimistic. The program definitely feels like it is on the upswing. I'm very pleased with how things are going.

Go Patriots!

Moore
Holloway/Grayer (depends on quickly the kid comes along) maybe Murrel?
Grayer?Abram?
Marko

That's my August guess at a starting line up. My August guess at our 2016 starting line up?

Do you know something about Jenkins and why he wouldn't be a starter for his final two seasons, or are you literally just guessing like the rest of us?

Just guessing. I think Coach Dave likes the "Face up 4" that can shoot it a little bit more than the "I'll catch it in the high post and hesitate on whether to shoot or drive until I move too fast and turn it over" 4.
