So... Too Early to Talk About Next Year?

Serious question:
Are we even sure that there is going to be a season next year? I've heard speculation that no vaccine = no physical school in person.

If George Mason is all online, I can't image athletics continuing (or even playing without fans).

I don't bring this up to necessarily go down that rabbit hole. It would just suck for guys like Boyd and Daddy to sit around another year without basketball. Maybe it would benefit guys like Mar, to have another year to heal and strengthen.

No guarantee. I think we're all holding out hope. If I have to wait another year to complain about DP I don't know what I'll do. ;)

How long before Kier joins Paulsen’s staff as a coach. I predict 5 years at Randolph Macon.

My thoughts exactly, I'm more willing to bet there is no season than there is one at this point.

David Cox lands another stud recruit. 2020 guard with high major offers.

I have a friend who is a URI grad and closely monitors the program and he has been saying that Kevin Sutton has as much to do with the caliber of recruits they are getting than anyone. I'm still shocked that JMU didn't go down his path, especially after firing Rowe. I know he was a finalist 4 years ago BEFORE hiring Rowe. Anyhow, G Mas should consider a fella like Sutton for HC. He's well connected and well respected. I'm sure he's probably happy where he is for now and would be looking for something a little higher possibly.

Going to pass on anyone associated with the dumpster fire that is JMU. If he couldn't convince JMU's AD that he was a better candidate than Rowe, how good of a salesman is he?

He recruits better than our coach but idk. So does Simpkins and he can’t get a shot. Would love to see him head coach one game as a test. Unfortunately we are going to have a terrible non conference and go 10-3 and all the fans are going to be so happy

Someone I spoke to last night who is close to Mason Athletics made a good point....Paulsen is not a go getter. Just isnt his personality to chase down 17 yr olds and beg them to play for him. He's more of the "will go out with me, check yes, no, or maybe" type. Seems to make sense since conf affiliation is our only major attraction in getting the Patriot League level kid with only low mid major offers.

If true....it certainly explains alot. But geez...you may have to actually chase down some people if you want to f*cking compete in the A-10.

AND it certainly tells me he doesn't deserve Mason and needs to be gone.

Lol imagine thinking you don’t need to sell kids on Mason to get them to come here. You’ve gotta sell your average kid just to come to school here when he has no other options, of course you have to sell it to basketball players getting recruited by other schools.

Imagine believing this BS and assuming it’s true.

obviously it's not true lol but he has a point that we aren't beating even keel teams for most of our recruits...

there’s a difference between scouting talent that you believe is a10 talent (whether they potentially can be a10 talent or already are) and being a go getter.

I can’t believe that Dave and co aren’t go getters. Everything I’ve seen and heard says they recruit hard and are everywhere they can be.

“what” they are recruiting can be debated, and rightfully so, but the drive behind their recruiting I think isn’t really needing to be questioned. I’d find it very hard to believe that they aren’t “go getters”.

Go Getters vs. Closers

They may be out there and know the talent when they see it but it doesn’t seem like they’ve been able to close the deal on the same type of talent that other schools have been able to so they aim slightly lower to get commitments.

The staff offers “A-10 talent” or higher but we don’t seem to sniff the recruits “top 5/10” lists when they start narrowing down their lists. Then they offer kids that don’t have any other A-10 offers and we land them because kids seem to often want to play up a conference from their talent level than down a conference.

It’s been stated a few times, the staff knows they need to recruit better. I just don’t know what they are doing behind the scenes to make that happen. We were all hoping the practice facility was the magic answer but it takes more than a shinny updated facility.

Simpkins has been quoted before saying that the assistant coaches know there’s a certain type of kid whose combination of talent and other characteristics fits what Dave wants, and that’s who they’re chasing.

Why do they do it that way? Because it takes money and effort to recruit and you’re wasting both if you bring in a kid who’s just not going to mesh with the head coach. No matter how many stars or P5 offers he has, it’s just not going to work out in the end.

Is he too rigid in going after mostly high-character, high work ethic kids, and should he take a few more chances on high-ceiling knuckleheads in the hopes he can mold them to fit what he’s looking for? Perhaps.

As @mkaufman1 already noted, DP and his assistants have been and will be judged by the results.

I would say short white guys can't recruit. But Pitino came into Iona and within a week it seemed he had 4 4 star kids signed sealed and delivered. I know many will say he paid them. But I doubt he is that stupid. Kids wanna play for a coach and program that gets them excited for thriving development and team achievement. Nothing about DP makes me thinks kids are excited to come play for him. Only the fact he "let" them into the A10 which for most has proven to be a disaster.

Is Otis the only DP recruit to finish all four years at Mason after 5 years? That's one diamond in the rough out of how many whiffs? Shitty conf results and below average program growth. As we all know, its time to show us you can recruit. Except he needed to do so a year ago.

I stand by belief he should of been fired at this season end. Clearly the recruiting game is changing and he wants little to no part of it. He clearly wants to settle at getting nice little kids that are estatic to get an A10 offer when they know deep down they don't belong at this level. Some end up getting hurt physically and mentally (Mar) trying to over perform their natural abilities in order to keep up in the A10.
