So... Too Early to Talk About Next Year?

GIVING DAY 2023
I would say short white guys can't recruit. But Pitino came into Iona and within a week it seemed he had 4 4 star kids signed sealed and delivered. I know many will say he paid them. But I doubt he is that stupid. Kids wanna play for a coach and program that gets them excited for thriving development and team achievement. Nothing about DP makes me thinks kids are excited to come play for him. Only the fact he "let" them into the A10 which for most has proven to be a disaster.

Is Otis the only DP recruit to finish all four years at Mason after 5 years? That's one diamond in the rough out of how many whiffs? Shitty conf results and below average program growth. As we all know, its time to show us you can recruit. Except he needed to do so a year ago.

I stand by belief he should of been fired at this season end. Clearly the recruiting game is changing and he wants little to no part of it. He clearly wants to settle at getting nice little kids that are estatic to get an A10 offer when they know deep down they don't belong at this level. Some end up getting hurt physically and mentally (Mar) trying to over perform their natural abilities in order to keep up in the A10.

Otis is the only DP recruit to complete all 4 years of his eligibility at Mason.

We will have 4 more after next season -- Ian Boyd, Greg Calixte, Javon Greene, and AJ Wilson.

Also, technically Jaire Grayer and Justin Kier graduated from Mason, they just had their final seasons here derailed by an injury.

They didn’t use their full four years of eligibility here even though they graduated.

But regardless, having 5 guys use their full eligibility at our school in 6 years is absolutely pitiful.

well that would not be entirely true, considering we aren’t counting any of the guys who finished their eligibility from Hewitt’s tenured.

I think it is safe to say that there were way too many whiffs in the first two recruiting cycles though.

Lol well if that’s the case then count all the guys from Hewitts recruiting classes that transferred or decomitted when Paulsen got hired.

I think we have? I know I’ve talked about Paulsen not being able to convince more of Hewitt’s guys to stick around.

Gotcha I must have missed that. Generally when people have talked transfer numbers on here he has gotten a pass for all the guys that left prior to his first season.

I included year zero when I tallied all the transfers earlier this year. I think losing Porter, Lockett, And Isaiah Jackson hurt the most because they were on the team already (Lockett the most because he chose to sit an extra year instead of playing under Paulsen), and could have really helped with the transfer. We also would have avoided having to recruit guys like Temara and Dixon and Murrell too). But cant change the past.

Lockett didn't sit an extra year - he transferred to and played for a JUCO.

Forgot about that...but it's kind of the same thing, wasted a year of eligibility at a JUCO instead of staying here (2 years at FIU, 1 year at NC State = 3 years of D1 instead of 4). We could have definitely used guards of the size of Lockett and Jackson for Paulsen's first 3-4 years here. Keeping Porter around could have eased the transition from Thompson and Jalen (Calixte coming off the bench his freshman year instead of being pressed to start -- Mar not having to be the starting 5 at the beginning of the year and settling in as a stretch 4).

But again, the past is the past, can't change it.

The question is whether Paulsen recognizes the importance of recruiting transfers to fill available scholarships?
I’ve gotta imagine that he does, I just question his ability to sell guys on coming here. Then again we are never tied to transfers so maybe I’m just talking out of my a** here.

We only have two points of evidence: one, the single transfer we've signed; two, an interview where he talked about transfers (especially grad transfers) and being afraid to stunt the growth of freshmen. So my guess is he is very reluctant to sign any transfer.

But we haven't signed even a JUCO player yet, and you'd think at the very least you could get a guy out of junior college who might be a little more ready to contribute right away (think Javonte Perkins for SLU; or Daryl Monroe and Shevon Thompson for us).

Furthermore, I think he's only targeted one JUCO. For the record, I'm very glad we didn't get him. Can't remember his name, but the guy didn't seem to do all that well at Kent St.

DP also has to sell "his system." Not sure if you have any real game you look at Mason and his history and think "yeah...Im going to play some ball there."

Which goes back to who he if focusing on....believing his system with right players will outlast any star laden cast of characters.

Again..I think in lower tiers it works....not so much A10 and above....

Let me get this straight...Wichita State runs a version of Paulsen's offense, UVA runs a version of Paulsen's defense, and yet we can't sell anyone on our "system?"

Difference being that they run it successfully.

Tony Bennett has done OK running a boring system, I’d say.
