AJ is already the most natural, explosive shot-blocker we've had since Big George. Between AJ, Calixte and Mar, we have length and athleticism up front and will no longer have to play a 6-4 guy at the 4 spot.

This is some great homer speak but I'm certainly not buying it yet, none of those guys are day one impact players.

Playing time won't be a factor this year. The time will be divided nicely.

Obviously this can change, but here is how I think MPG will be broken out this season:

Starters:
Otis, Grayer, Kier, Boyd, Calixte

1) PG Otis 35 mpg, Javon Greene 5 mpg (Total 80 mpg)
2) SG Grayer 30 mpg, Javon Greene 10 mpg (Total 40 mpg)
3) Kier 25 mpg, Mar 15 mpg (Total 40 mpg)
4) Boyd 25 mpg, Wilson 15 mpg (Total 40 mpg)
5) Calixte, 25 mpg, Relvao 15 mpg, (Total 40 mpg)

Everyone will average between 15-35 mpg. Solid 9 -man rotation.

I'm pretty surprised how highly people think of AJ and how well he'll do considering he's never played a college game before. I think he'll make some crazy athletic plays every now and again, but I think it's going to take a while until he gets used to the grind of a college season. I don't think he'll be close to what Jalen gave us last year... not this year. I would love to be wrong on this one!

My guess is we finish around 7th or 8th in the league.

He has an actual jumper out to the 3 so hopefully it'll translate in real games. I def don't see him having the inside presence Jalen had last year but the jumper could surprise teams.

If he can stay out of foul trouble, then he is ahead.

True, but with a young shot blocker, avoiding fouls is the biggest challenge. AJ has had a year to watch the college game, so hopefully that helps him avoid biting on pump fakes and some of the other veteran tricks that befall many inexperienced players.

Plus, although I'm sure Dave and his staff drool over AJ's athleticism, a big part of our coaching system relies more on playing solid man-to-man defense and less on steals and blocks. That doesn't mean the latter two aren't important; they just as as important as some here want them to be.

I was speaking solely about AJ's defense, which is the biggest reason he most likely will start at the 4.

His ability to block/challenge shots gives us a weapon we didn't have last season.

His presence also allows our 6-4 guys to rotate at the 2 and 3 spots instead of constantly being on the negative end of a size mismatch at the 4.

The best part is AJ and Mar are both athletic enough to guard wings when teams try to go small against us.

Jalen was a terrific offensive player, but we have other guys who can score. We need Calixte and Wilson to defend the paint -- whatever points we get from either one will be icing on the cake.

I might be in the minority, but from what ive seen of AJ, I think he easily replaces JJ and then some. Add in Mar and the rest of our guards and there isnt much drop off. Who can replace Moore's points will be key.
AJ could very well be better than JJ by the end of his career. But its a big leap to think he will be better as a freshman. I have no doubt the ability is there, but freshman need some time to adjust how the game is officiated. Do they even call traveling in Kenner league? my second thought is AJ looks like a solid rim protector, but how is his man to man defense. They don't typically show that in highlight films.... hahah

All teams improve throughout the season, but I think you see the biggest improvements with young teams. No matter where we fall in the regular season, we will be a scary team come the A-10 Tourny. Expect Ajs local fans to come out to give him even more motivation.

But he was no Shevon.
The what if's of if DP could have coached him for a couple years are crazy with Shevon. That drop step with no dribble he often did could have been corrected and he would have been an absolute monster. Same with JJ if the plague didn't try to convert him to a 2-3. such a shame
