And if Wilson and/or Mar aren't ready to defend the 4, we rolled with Boyd, Grayer, and Kier guarding that position almost all of last season and still won a lot of games.

So long as Relvao and Calixte aren't turnstiles on defense and can rebound the easy ones, we should be just fine. I'm pretty confident in our four returning guards.

I know AJ can defend the 4. Calixte will have a harder adjustment since he's a true freshman and hasn't had a year to adjust to the speed of the college game. But he's big and strong and moves great for 6-8, 230. So I figure he'll be able to hold his own.

I don't understand why people think this kid is already a great post defender because you saw some GIFs of him rejecting shots for guys he's not guarding.
How about the people who saw him in Kenner playing against other college players.

The pessimism on this board is palpable, as our friend Jon Rothstein would say.

I mean, c'mon people. For shit's sake, this team is young, talented, and absolutely easy to root for on and off the court. A little optimism from the actual fans of the team won't kill you. Yes, maybe we don't know that AJ will be effective on either side of the ball, but he certainly has the tools. Drink some Kool-Aid and start saying more things like, "I can't wait to watch AJ posterize that white guy from Davidson after he blocks the shit out of his shot for a run-out fast break!"

I'm not sure it's pessimism. You can still think this team will be less successful than last year's, but also have optimism for the future. Isn't this team lacking senior leadership?

Who said he's a great post defender? For the vast majority of college basketball teams, the 4 is now primarily a perimeter position. He has the athleticism and explosiveness to be very effective guarding that spot.

I agree with your first point, but I don't think we are missing leadership from the players whatsoever. Otis is the type of leader on and off the court that I hope goes straight in to coaching after graduation. Jaire provides another kind of emotional and aggressive leadership when he gets going. I just think we lack experience and a little depth.

I also want to explain that my predictions for this season and my expectations are different. My prediction is what I would bet money on, my expectations are much higher than my prediction. My brain says 16 wins, my heart says 22.

Hell yeah, AJ is going to play above the rim and be a force this year. Otis is going to hit those fadeaways like Kobe. Jaire is Marquise2.0 with a better shot. Kier and Boyd become men on the court this year. Calixte is undercover freshman of the year candidate. Greene will hit from unlimited range. Mar will exceed the hype. Relvao will MAKEBASKET. Lots of wins and lots of minutes for our walk-ons. LETS GO!!!

LET'S GO!!!! I watched a little of Javon's 58-point turkey dinner today, since somebody posted it on Twitter, and now I'm ready to cut down the nets. Dude is going to have at least 3 games where he pours in 20+. One game with 30+. I'm calling it now for the left-hand assassin. Dude is an elite bucket-getter.

Finally some sanity on this issue. I fully agree.

Look at Payton Aldridge. That's not a low post bruiser.

Cue the video of 6-2 Quise stuffing 6-9 TJ Cline's shot right back into his face last season at Richmond.

AJ's defense is going to be a problem for the rest of the A-10 this season.

Wow! The debate's heating up on the boards with just one week to go. I think I'll watch the games to see how individuals develop and how the team progresses. Time will give us the answers as far as the total number of wins/losses. My prediction is that there will be a drunk post or two declaring that we suck after a loss and a few declaring us the best team in the league after a nice win. Isn't basketball season fantastic?

I guarantee you've never seen him play, Kenner or otherwise. Stop talking out of your a**.
Just saying everyone was high on Troy because of his ability to dunk. Although, my hunch is AJ will be be a good player. I must admit I never actually watched him, but from different interviews with Paulsen and AJ, it appears the staff was recruiting him really heavily. Must be a reason. And Paulsen has now seem him in practice for two years and still says great things.
