If Paul Hewitt gets an extension after this season I'm done with all donations and season tickets until he's gone. That's pretty much the only thing that would make me cancel my seats. I'll still go to games, but god almighty I am not going to buy a whole season's worth.

They won't extend him after this year. He has to have the team show much improvement over the next two to stick around. Relax everyone,

Mr. Met: how would you define much improvement? If we have a similar year to 2009 next year minus the painful buzzer beater would that be progress in your mind given our youth? Thanks for your time .

Hewitt needs an NIT appearance to justify staying around for the last year of his contract. Only thing that would justify an extension would be an NCAA win, and I don't see that happening.

If it does, great. But I doubt it will be because of Hewitt. It will be because he brought in a good assistant or two who have better game management skills than he does.

If Im the AD......I need not only an NCAA trip next year but more than likely a win to show me not to fire Hewitt. There is just too much negative and cons attached to him to think anything will change or anything less will even come close to justifying the results so far.

That being said, I think the case is there for him to be let go this season...but we all know that is a long shot.

For me, to see Hewitt stick around for the last year, I need to see a big jump in improvement from this year in terms of wins. If this team finishes with 13 or 14 wins, I'd have to see next years squad finish with 18-20 which in the A-10 would probably leave them on the cusp of an NIT berth. The team will have a lot of turnover (4 frosh, 3 probably will play, possibly a 5th new guy), but they all will have the opportunity to jump in and contribute much like Marko Holloway Jenkins have.

For an extension, I need to see not only improvement for year 4 but year 5 as well. That means if next year they win 18, the following year it has to be 20+. I for one need to see that "upward swing".

I understand we all have high expectations and I share the same expectations with many, especially considering where Hewitt came in. I still hold that Hewitt is not the long term answer at this time, but do think there is still opportunity for him to succeed.

The hard part is the record shows that Hewitt has been "succsesful" in his time at Mason. Much like a poster here would constantly try and point out the overall record in an attempt to discredit the "haters" and say we arent Duke or Kentucky etc etc......the general donk on the street wont know any different.

People that are in touch with the program and follow it all know that Hewitt is simply not the man for the job going forward and that will lead us to a new level in the A10. He wasnt going to be that from the get go, so its not neccessarily his fault....he is who we (most) thought he was. Besides his questionable at best coaching and other mediocre abilities, he just isnt the type of personality/package of a person that builds a team and goes upward.

I have no doubt that Hewitt could coach an NBA-talent level team to success. If you've got guys who love to create their own shots and make plays on risky moves to the basket, Hewitt is your man.

Sadly, here at George Mason we need a coach with a defined system that plays to our player's strengths and keeps them focused and driven on the court.

Once again, if we let him get to year 5 without an extension, we deserve the lame-a** recruiting that is guaranteed to ensue from a lame-duck staff.

If he surprises us and comes up with something great next season, extend him by 2.

If we wind up with more of the same, cut him loose.

It's the only play that makes even a lick of sense.

Oh I completely agree with you. It does make more sense to make a decision on him next year at the end because of the overall impact. I was more or less talking in general but did fail to state that in my quick writeup:oops:

Just for fun on a snowy day.... Let's assume that Anthony Grant, who is reportedly on the hot seat at Alabama, gets fired. Let's also assume Mason decides to pull the trigger and fire Hewitt.

What would your reaction to Mason hiring Grant?

Honestly, I think we would be hypocritical if we rejoiced at that scenario. Grant really hasn't done anything at Alabama and appears to have ridden the coattails of Eric Maynor at vcu to success. We call Hewitt a retread, but his credentials would be better than Grant's. Now that being said, you do have to consider the fact that Alabama isn't the easiest place to recruit and win consistently.

If we did pull the trigger, I'd want a thorough process for hiring the next coach with a committee of people involved. A process by which no stone went unturned.
