Possible coaching scenarios

But by not extending him, what recruit is going to want to sign with a lame duck coach? So in reality, next year (year 4) is the make-or-break year. He either gets an extension after year 4 or he is fired/leaves on his own. Which means nothing is going to happen after this season unless something happens like we go 0-16 in conference play or there are serious NCAA sanctions found in the next few weeks about him.
Yep, that's my thinking as well even if TOC were to retire in the summer.

Also depends on what coaches are available or become available. that is if TOC even has a coaching list

Sitting in my seat whispering things to my friends next to me and not getting heated or involved in the game at all.

Just Hewitt
Sitting in my seat watching the game, Taking long pulls off of my bourbon, quietly muttering to myself and then disappearing into the closet to furiously abuse myself and cry until GMUTom texts me to say its safe to come out.

Just Hewitt

This is obviously just purely a mental exercise, and I know many of you will have to keep some hatred deep down inside to even consider it, but I was wondering this:

Hewitt's biggest strength seems to be recruiting.
Gary Williams was always rumored to hate recruiting. Assuming that is correct, he must be a pretty damn good in game coach with sub-par recruiting

So, what if you could have one as head coach and the other as assistant or both as co-coaches, (whatever..)

Do you think that would have made an awesome combination?

The only thing GW would share is chicken wings with young co-eds......

I don't think that particular partnership would work because GW's red-a** personality wouldn't mesh with Hewitt's laid back cool, but I do think you're on to something that TOC needs to strongly consider: finding an experienced bench coach with the tactical strengths to complement Hewitt's recruiting prowess.

Hewitt would remain the head coach, but it should be obvious by now that he needs some help.

I keep going back to what JMU did after they brought in Mike Deane to help out Brady. All of a sudden, a team that never shared the ball or played defense started doing both. Deane completely overhauled the culture of that program.

The most successful part of Hewitt's tenure at GT came when he had very strong, competent assistants who had Hewitt's ear. Dean Keener was said to have run most of the Xs and Os and was damn good at it.

I think Hewitt can win here -- and I love his recruiting -- but only if he's willing to make some staff changes.

Who would go. Houston or Kreider? I don't see them forum Skeeter after just hiring him. My money would be to let go of Houston. In the granted limited exposure I've had of him he seems even more laid back than Hewitt.

You let go of Houston you might lose Copes. Where would we make up those 4 points and 4 fouls per game?

No chance he cans Kreider....He seems to do most of the behind the scenes recruiting/scouting work. Plus he's a young guy that college kids probably enjoy being around. Houston is the highest paid of the assistant coaches...he needs to be the sacrafice if the shit hits the fan.

It would have to be Houston, unless Kreider perceives our program as a sinking ship and jumps off.

Even if Hewitt agreed to do it, who he'd hire would be an interesting question.

You're not gonna get anyone who already has job security since Hewitt conceivably could be fired after next season.

Maybe we could steal Mike Deane? I'd think we could pay him more than JMU since we don't have football to worry about.

But Mike Dean was Brady's college coach...thats why the dynamic works where Brady can be in charge, yet not feel threatened by his assistant being a "bigger" part of the operation.

You guys need to better familiarize yourself with Mike Deane and his time at Marquette and elsewhere.

Still, not a terrible idea by any means. Hey, I wouldn't mind seeing if Tony Shaver would come on up as well, but I've always been a Shaver fan since he was at HSC.

Billy Coen before him from the CAA as well.

I think Ahmad Dorsett would only fill the role Kreider currently holds as a #3 guy. I don't think we have room for another 30 something novice coach. I like the idea of an older maybe even semi retired guy. I don't see a guy of Hewitts age listening to a coach as young as Dorsett.

I vote for #2. Firing Hewitt now, while it might be satisfying, probably would ensure we do not win another game this year. Hewitt's 20 plus years of experience might be good for a win against St. Bonnie.
The future used to look so bright.
