Actually, there should be 3 open scholarships at the end of this contract including Julian Royal's.
My bad. I know he is sitting out due to transferring, but our roster has him listed as a junior.

Jim, I was thinking this was the case as well, but then I did the math. With four players coming in next year and another four the year after, we will only have two scholarships open the season after Hewitt's contract expires (Holloway and Marko).
While it's never ideal for a coach to recruit when there is no assurance he will be there the next season, two scholarships is not the end of the world. I also get the argument that the players might not play as hard for a lameduck coach, but the flip side is that they could play harder to help him keep his job.
I'm not lobbying for him to stay all five years, but I also don't think we necessarily need to extend him after year four if he stays all five years.
Jim, I agree with all of that. My main point was that if the administration is hellbent on keeping him for the duration of his contract, I don't think extending him after year four is an absolute necessity.
Tom, if our administration is hellbent on keeping him for the duration of his contract, my liver will likely give out first and I'll be dead.
Lemme guess... with " ^ Fire " in the middle in red Sharpie?Anyone on here have one of those "Just Hewitt" t-shirts they gave out during his first year? Would love to wear one to the game on Saturday.
The four scholarships that will open up for the Class of 2015 are one of the biggest reasons why I support pulling the rip cord after this season -- assuming that, as most of us expect, we get absolutely boat-raced by the rest of the A-10.
While I believe Hewitt can, and probably will, recruit us four good players in that class, all that gives us is four young players who can easily transfer somewhere else if he's fired after Year 5.
Does that open us up to the possibility that Mayimba, Lockett and Porter could opt out of their LOIs? Yes.
But better that than having eight freshmen or sophomores looking to jump ship when Hewitt finally gets the ax ... because make no mistake, even TOC is gonna have to see this disaster for what it is at some point.
This would be my guess for what would happen if Hewitt were fired at the end of the year:
Lost:
We'd lose Mayimba (because with his lengthy, athleticism and defensive prowess I could see a St. Johns, Seton Hall or Rutgers taking a run at him).
We'd lose Lockett, because he's a Georgia kid and has no ties to the area
Maybe:
We "might" lose Holloway, but he's going to be heavily featured in the offense for any coach we bring in, so he might stick around his last two years.
We might Moore, although he'd have been bitten twice by coaches being fired. So I don't know if he wants go through the recruitment process for the third time in three years.
We might lose Marko, but I have a feeling he's pretty comfortable here.
We might lose Porter, but he seems like he's a big project and is a local kid. I think he winds up coming here so long as our coach seems to know what he's doing and can sell a plan to Porter for his growth.
Pretty safe I think:
Royal, just transferred. He won't transfer again.
Okoloji: Where is he going to go, to a DII team? He stays and hopes the new coach can figure him out.
Gray, it'll be his senior season and I doubt he'll want to sit out a season. There will be a void on the wing and he might be able to fill it.
Jenkins, already red-shirted. I don't think he'd burn another year sitting on the bench.
Edwards: see Okoloji
Copes: See Okojoli
So worst case scenario: We lose Mayimba, Lockett, Holloway and Marko and are left with:
PG: Moore/Edwards
SG: Gray/Edwards (as an emergency spot shooter)
SF: Gray/Okoloji
PF: Royal/Okoloji
C: Copes/Porter
Not a lot of offensive firepower on that team, but if the new coach can figure out how to reach Copes, Okoloji and Edwards (who have all been decent to good defenders here) we might be able to grind out some ugly defensive games until we can get some shooters in here in year two and three.
So, Gray could potentially start at 2 positions at the same time.
I could see Anali moving on in this case. If he graduates, why would he stick around for a new coach, new system, etc. I bet he would bolt.
My personal belief is that AO will graduate in May and move on ala Paris Bennett. Based on some of his recent tweets hes on pace to graduate this spring. I think he knows the writing is on the wall here.
I've been wondering about this as well. Certainly seems possible. If so, we need a SG and a PG.So we could feasibly have two open scholarships for next season? That could make things a lot more interesting.
I'll get the craigslist casual encounters ad ready:So we could feasibly have two open scholarships for next season? That could make things a lot more interesting.
But by not extending him, what recruit is going to want to sign with a lame duck coach? So in reality, next year (year 4) is the make-or-break year. He either gets an extension after year 4 or he is fired/leaves on his own. Which means nothing is going to happen after this season unless something happens like we go 0-16 in conference play or there are serious NCAA sanctions found in the next few weeks about him.Jim, I agree with all of that. My main point was that if the administration is hellbent on keeping him for the duration of his contract, I don't think extending him after year four is an absolute necessity.

I would love Tommy Amaker as our point guard! That guy could fly...I would love to pull Tommy Amaker away from Harvard.
