Mission Statement
We, the Concerned Neighbors for Sustainable Development, unite with a shared commitment to preserve the residential character and environmental balance of our community surrounding George Mason University. Our mission is to actively oppose and halt the construction of a cricket stadium on the university premises intended for commercial use, diverging from its original collegiate purpose.
We believe in the importance of maintaining the integrity of our neighborhood, fostering a harmonious coexistence between residents and institutions. The proposed commercial cricket stadium poses a threat to the tranquility of our community, bringing with it increased noise, traffic congestion, and potential disruptions to our daily lives."
"On Jan. 29th by accident a neighbor stumbled upon a zoom meeting in which, George Mason University announced they are building a new 12,000 seat open air stadium. The stadium will house a commercial professional cricket team for Major League Cricket (MLC). This stadium financed by the MLC owner will also serve as home for Mason’s baseball team. Groundbreaking for the stadium is set for this winter with events going live in summer of 2024. Leveraging GMU’s special state designation, the professional team owner was able to bypass the normal rigor that would have gone into planning and permitting a new stadium until it was announced there would be imminent groundbreaking. We are here to gather inform our neighbors of what is happening, the impact it will have on our safety, density, and community and let interested parties know when there are meetings, as well as, contacts to share your concerns and petitions. The effect of this commercial venue, if not planned properly, will have an impact on many city and county neighborhoods and schools. CURRENTLY THERE IS NOT MUCH INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO THE PUBILC. (Ex. Traffic studies). George Mason has done little to share plans with neighboring communities."
