I understand they want to unify the whole university under one logo. However, the president should have the authority to pick one existing logo and say ‘from now on, we will only use this logo’

Add a U to the GM, and that would be perfect too.
Why not have 2 logos? Most schools have more than one. Now we only have one, and it is awful.

If a logo requires extra text and/or context to look good, it is not a good logo. The whole point of a logo is that it is a symbol that stands on its own without context.
