I believe GMU would have to be having as bad a season as Lamar was that season in order for BE to fire Hewitt during the season. If we somehow manage to play closer to .500 by conf season, or during it, I see him letting Hewitt stay. I think it still has to do with "new guy on the block" not trying to do anything drastic and fit in rather than look like he has no sense of what has been going on and "step on toes." I think BE will probably feel a little more ballsy with a year of being in charge under his belt.

Wow. If that's the case...then its a true indictment of failure about the university and the future of Mason athletics if the new AD is worried about fitting in, looking like he doesn't know the state of the program and doesnt want to step on toes.

This is a dumb comment. You are acting like he Edwards just got promoted from towel boy and this is his first big time gig.

Lol it is a very rudimentary view on the situation, ill agree. I was only thinking because of the dynamics of how BE got the job. TOC left, he wasn't fired. If BE was hired under the circumstances of "the old guy didn't want to do it anymore so we gave you this opportunity" rather than "we told the old guy to leave because he was horrible and need a new direction immediately" I just think there might be a tad bit more trepidation initially. Time will tell however. I'm just not seeing BE pull a quick trigger on Hewitt though, that is unless we don't win any more games through the start of conf season. He'll surprise me if he does fire Hewitt if we somehow manage to start playing .500 ball or better.

As Tom pointed out if they hired the towel boy...maybe. But the old AD mutually agreed to be put to pasture and Cabrera, until proven otherwise, hired a dynamic younger guy to lead the department. Cabrera strikes as the guy who wants others to be proactive. I doubt he wanted him to sit around and make TOC feel good.....

Right, im not trying to portray BE as a passive line tower. I just think BE wants to take in at least the first half of the bball season before he starts doing anything drastic. Its usually the case when anyone transitions to a new job they dont come in and start making sweeping changes unless the situation is a complete and utter disaster(I know that's debateable with our tenured fans/alumni).

Ok. That I get leaving Hewitt in place through the early part of season and cutting him come Feb.

But Hewitt at this moment is not helping with that cause...lol.

Yeah I guess I should have just said that in my initial post haha. Give Hewitt the first half of the season to show what he's got, really get a feel for the whole program, and then if things are not going well, then bring the heat.

Steve Masiello. He's already tried to get out of Manhattan once and he'll be in Fairfax in a couple days - make him an offer to switch teams at the start of the game,

I certainly wasn't particularly impressed with Manhattan. Masiello may have had a very good year last season, but this year his team isn't doing well (1-4 with their only win against Binghamton, ranked 331st by rpiforecast). Indeed rpiforecast predicts a ranking of 225 for them and 219 for us by the end of the season. And they made the same sort of knucklehead passes to no one in the second half that we made in the first half. They suffered a long stretch of empty possessions toward the end of the first half, a characteristic that we've exhibited many times this year. So how much of improvement is Masiello likely to bring to the table?

I'm not sold on him, either. He took a timeout with 8:01 left. The media timeout was at the next deadball. That's just poor time management. I know it's small, but stuff like that drives me nuts.

He has said his young team will get better by mid season. Can we say that? Not sold on Masiello either. However, he did beat us on our home court.

Now now.....Hewitt loves to do the same thing.

I don't think you can judge Masiello's coaching ability on one game, but I'm not sold on him either. The whole college transcript/resume thing. Seems pretty shady to me.

Manhattan has lost to Florida State, UMass, Northeastern (picked 1st in CAA), and George Mason. I'd only count one of those as a really bad loss. They also lost their top 3 scorers from last years team.

The 4 seasons before Masiello was hired, Manhattan had gone 3-15, 4-14, 9-9, & 5-13 in conference. In Masiello's first year they went 12-6, and by year 3 they were MAAC conference champs giving #4 Louisville a close one (60-60 w/under 2 minutes before a certain crafty white guy went off for the Cardinals).

To be fair, I didn't see the Manhattan game, was watching football instead. I did see them in the tournament and they looked solid. I'd roll the dice on a guy with that resume over 4 seasons.
