Name the next head coach (a GMUJim tribute album)

ODUCoach

Four-star Recruit
By the way, Prohm from Murray State lived in Fairfax until high school, I believe.

Jeff Capel (former vcu HC, now asst. at Duke)

Matt Matheny (current Elon HC)

Hubert Davis is an interesting name because of his local ties to Lake Braddock. I know zero of his coaching reputation and he's only been with UNC since 2012...so I'd probably have to pass on hiring him.

I remember him annoying me on TV a few years back. Was very dismissive of mid-majors in the tournament or something. Kind of like the Jay Bilas vcu comments or the anti-GMU comments in 2006. Who was it that bashed the GMU selection in '06? Billy Packer?

I don't know anything about his coaching potential either - I did love Davis with the Knicks though.

So no Scott Cherry?

Whoever it is, lets make sure they know how to motivate young guys, knows all the X's and O's of the game, can make in game adjustments, recruit etc. Basically opposite what we have now.

Are you a Duke or MD fan? is that why? Or because of their academic scandal? Cause both Cherry and David (teammates at UNC) were BEFORE the scandal was said to have started.

If they played for Dean Smith they were there when the scandal was going on...

Dean Smith started coaching in the 60's...are you saying it started then? Because I've seen most people say it began around the time of the 93-94 or 94-95 team...both Cherry ('93) and Davis ('92) were gone by then.

When did Duke win back to back titles? It started right around then.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/10/22/us/unc-report-academic-fraud/

"During the Smith years, 1961 to 1997, the report says there were 54 basketball players enrolled in paper classes, although the paper classes started in the spring of 1993, the year of Smith's final championship."

Looks like it goes back to 1993. I would assume this does not mean that Cherry is connected in anyway. I'm just presenting the info and don't have an opinion on him yet.

Oh for chris sakes...

I paid for my own tuition and took a few courses that should have qualified as "paper" courses....and once you count some of the general ed stuff where there's 300 people in a lecture hall and the only thing is a mid term and final scantron test, there is no real education happening.

So I personally didn't get totally up in arms.

What was going on at UNC was far more out of the norm than a lecture hall no one showed up for and everyone cheated off that one girl that did type class.

They were emailing admins with the exact grade they would need the player to receive in a class that didn't exist to keep them eligible. It is the worst academic scandal in the history of the NCAA and it isn't even close. And if they skate, it's further proof the NCAA is a fraud.

Scott Cherry graduated in 93 (spring of 93 was when the fake classes began) with a degree in business administration. I think it's an extremely safe bet that he wasn't involved.

High Point won again today. 4-2 against D-I (5-2 overall) with losses at TicMond (got drubbed) and a tough 3 point loss at Clemson.

Trivia Question: Name the former Mason men's basketball coach who played on a college team implicated in a point shaving scandal (obviously he wasn't involved)?

My anti-UNC comment wasn't meant to rule out Cherry. It looks like he is doing a good job at High Point. I am more concerned that he was unable to sell forklifts prior to entering coaching.

My perception is that the UNC coaching tree hasn't set the world on fire. I am too lazy to research it. I am probably wrong as someone will likely point out.

If not Jay, then Scott would be a good choice, probably. What do I know?

College athletic scholarships are academic fraud in general. Between what I saw at Mason, to what my nephew tells me happens at UNH where he is on athletic scholarship....its all a complete and utter scam.

Im not defending UNC, I just think the hand wringing over it is a bit much. But then again, I see it as a benefit to my people in getting into college that could never afford or qualify without the help of "the system."

Was Scott unable to sell forklifts? Or was he just looking for something better to do? (coaching more rewarding to him personally than selling forklifts).

And yeah, I wont be that guy...but you don't know much about the UNC coaching tree if you think it hasn't set the world on fire...maybe the more recent tree...but there are TONS of coaches that played/coached under Smith all over basketball that do just fine.

No idea. I know Houston played AGAINST the Boston College team that Henry Hill and company were using to fix games. The game against Rhode Island was one that was suppose to be "fixed" by it was one of the ones they lost.
