Realistically, it is unlikely a rising senior is going to transfer. Nor is somebody who has already burned their redshirt. So that leaves us with 5 players that don't fall in either category: Isiah Jackson, Eric Lockett, Therence Mayimba, Marquise Moore and Trey Porter.

And if those guys transfer out, it's going to take even longer to dig out of this God-forsaken mess than it would otherwise.

Porter and Mayimba are the longest, most explosive athletes on our roster. Jackson also has shown flashes that he can be an impact player.

While I agree you don't keep a lousy coach in some misguided attempt to avoid transfers, it would only make our job that much more attractive to candidates if we have some promising young talent to build with.

Hire a coach who can take over the program at mid-season so he can earn the trust of these guys and get a jump on recruiting. Maybe one that isn't even coaching in the college ranks. One that could brag that developed NBA players. One that the fans will immediately get behind because of a connection to the school. If only there was someone like that.

But he probably wants nothing to do with us. But Edwards needs to make that call soon to test the waters.

Assuming you're talking about Jay L., do you seriously think he'd leave the Celtics in the middle of the season?

I can't imagine he would, but perhaps I'm wrong.

Who knows? Maybe he wants to be the head coach in college, maybe he doesn't, maybe he wants to be an NBA HC. But Edwards should be on the phone selling it.

If not Jay, then someone else. I am sure Edwards is working on his list now. Jay need to be near the top. IMO.

I was just questioning whether he'd leave the Celtics mid-season, not whether he'd want the Mason job at all.

I agree Larranaga should be on Edwards' list.

Not only is Jay very well-regarded as a coach, his hiring would go a long way to repairing the damage to the fan base caused by his father's departure.

I remembered that Edwards recently replaced the basketball coach at Jacksonville (Tony Jasick coach of IPFW and last year's mid-major coach of the year---see http://jacksonville.com/sports/bask...rsity-hires-tony-jasick-head-basketball-coach.) This link also talks about others he interviewed for the position. So I thought I'd look to see how they were doing.

They are currently 1-4 with their lone win against a non Div 1 Florida National. Jacksonville opened the season with a 30+ loss to Hofstra. Sagarin has them as #342 out of 351 Div 1 programs. For the record, Mason is currently at #260 (Fordham is the lowest A10 at #271).

Certainly Mason is a more attractive job than is Jacksonville, but we should prepare ourselves for a painful transition.

If I can nit pick, Im more concerned they gave cliff warren 3 consecutive losing seasons. Hope Edwards sees that logic dont fly here.

I saw the same thing. I'd like to think that being in the Atlantic 10 and not having football, makes it less likely he would have that much of a leash. I know Edwards wants to see improvement, so I'm not sure how he can justify improvement with less wins in a crucial year. It was also interesting that Warren did not have his contract bought out, his contract was just not renewed.

I get that Jay Larranaga is qualified and has the potential to be a good college head coach, but I think hiring him would have gimmick written all over it. As if we're not enough of a laughing stock right now, we'd be adding the drama of being the program that hired the son of the disgruntled coach who abandoned us because he felt abandoned. It would be like a bad soap opera come to life.

After Coach L left, I was a big (HUGE!) proponent of making a big splash to show we would not skip a beat. I wanted us to forgo the route of hiring some no-name assistant — unless we got Bill Courtney — and instead hire someone with head coaching experience and a big name. Well, I unfortunately got what I wanted, and now look at where we are. We have a big name with a big salary and a big losing record.

The next time around, I want no drama, no publicity stunts, no side stories. If Jay is the best candidate we can find in the entire country, then we should hire the guy. I just have trouble believing his name would surface at all in this conversation if he wasn't Coach L's son.

I'm not sure if we'd have this conversation without him having that last name either simply because we wouldn't know about him. I do think if we did know about him however, and his last name was Jones, Smith, Brown, or Krzyzewski plenty of us wold look at him as a great hire.

It really doesn't matter though for two important reasons 1. this is a message board and not like Edwards is using it to search for candidates and 2. Jay Larranaga has a great shot at getting an NBA head coaching job in a couple years which even on the low end is $2 million a year - even more than Hewitt was being overpaid at Ga Tech.

Trying to get a handle on what BE might do is tough, but I do like the fact he hired an up and coming coach in his 30's at Jacksonville. Hopefully that means he wouldn't dip into the retread well if/when we need to hire our next coach. Better a hungry assistant/young head coach than talking to some 50 something coach doing TV now....

Agreed on all of this. And money aside, I could see Jay pursuing the NBA route as a way of distancing himself from his father's success at the college level. I'm sure Rick Pitino's son feels enough pressure coaching DI basketball at Minnesota, I can't imagine the pressure he'd feel coaching at Louisville when his dad retires.

I thought about that too - but it's certainly not unprecedented either.

Personally I'd love it for the "gimmick" reason - the program needs a boost. Would be tough for Jay Larranaga to live up to the legacy though.

The pressure would be mitigated somewhat by the fact that Jay would be replacing a dumpster fire instead of directly succeeding his father, but your point is valid.
