Bring in TOC to finish out the year. He's still on our payroll, right?

This would actually be a fitting punishment for an epic disaster of a hire, to make TOC suffer through the next three months trying to coach the crappy team his hand-picked guy put together.

Very creative, 89. I like it.

In all seriousness, does anyone have confidence in any of the assistant coaches to serve as an interim coach?

No, but who cares? It would be an enormous lift to the entire fan base simply to be rid of Hewitt.

I've heard through the grapevine that Edwards is already shuffling things up in the athletic department. Apparently the women's volleyball coach is out after 30 years at GMU.

If I were Brad Edwards, I'd write off this season as a debacle, and fire Hewitt now. He needs to let the fan base know that he's serious about winning. I wouldn't' let Hewitt off the plane from Puerto Rico without making the change now.

P8,

Pat Kendrick has already resigned. And, IMO, it's too early in the season to replace Hewitt.

I'm not suggesting that he be retained long enough to earn another longevity bonus.

Then what's the difference?

I'm asking this seriously, not to be a smart-a**. This is a lost season after 5 games.

Why wait until March 2015 to do what should've been done in March 2014?

Its a plus to fire him now. You get the fan base on your side and other potential hires know this is a serious Ad. You also get a headstart on a search.

Curious, how is the last mens bball coach Brad hired doing?

Does anyone know how much Jay makes with the Celtics? Or how much an NBA assistant generally makes?

Most of us were saying we might have 5 wins the rest of the season. And that's with Hewitt.

Id rather get him out the door, save money, put the job on people's radar early, and quite possibly let the kids get over the shock and have time to contemplate that they like Mason and would be open to another coach.

I cant find any real positives about keeping him the rest of the season. Not even 5 games.

As for an assistant finishing.....we may really not know what we have. Not saying any of them are the next hire by any means. But its quite possible they have not shown alot based on how Hewitt runs the ship....

This is an excellent post, esp. the bolded part.

Firing Hewitt now and giving the players a chance to see if they play better without him might be our best chance to keep our most promising young guys.

That, IMHO, should be one of Edwards' two main goals at this point.

Given that the program is a train wreck, it will only be that much harder to attract a quality replacement for Hewitt if the young core players scatter into the wind.

This is not the NBA where they fire coaches a few games into the season. IMO, it's important now for Edwards to project that he's supporting his coach during a very difficult time. This is important in hiring the next coach, who will want to be ensured that he will be given sufficient time to clean up this situation.

I get what you're saying, and I agree that no coach worth a damn would take the job unless he was sure he'd have time to rebuild the program without having to cut corners.

That said, if the new coach still has the ship moving full-speed in the wrong direction after 3-plus seasons like Hewitt has, he shouldn't expect to be comfortable.

As I've written previously on this board, I believe that Edwards has been tasked to clean house. If so, shouldn't this be evident by now to Hewitt?

Conversely, should this coach be given any time when he was handed a pretty good team, a strong program overall, but grossly underachieved? Then mismanaged the roster which brings us to where we are today.

GS,

I believe that we all agree on Hewitt's deficiencies. The question is when should he be terminated?

Any coach with half a brain (sans ours) can see what is going on. They would not be bothered with an in season firing. It might even be in the best interest of our current coach's mental health, to just step away from this burning house.
