This is gonna require some Edwards magic and a bag of cash, but I think we should go hard to steal Mike Rhoades from Rice.
Here are just a few reasons why I think he'd be a very attractive candidate:
1. He's an East Coast guy all the way -- played his college hoops in Pennsylvania, coached in Virginia -- who might jump at the opportunity to return to his northeast roots.
2. He has made magic at Rice, a perennial doormat in men's hoops. Rice's overall record is only 11-19, but he finished his first season 8-10 in C-USA and already has two top-100 recruits signed.
3. He has a gazillion contacts in the northeastern recruiting corridor, which just happens to be where we're getting most of our players these days.
4. He was the brains behind vcu's defensive system. Shaka has admitted as much.
5. C-USA (RPI 17) is no match for A-10 (RPI 7). Gonna be tough making the NCAAs out of a league that will be one bid most of the time. Our job is much more attractive now that we're in one of the best basketball leagues in America.
Can we convince Rhoades to leave a school that gave him his first D-I head coaching job after just one season? Who knows? But he's not going to be there forever anyhow ... may as well even the karmic score for Rick Barnes while we have a chance.
