Mar Broken Foot

Staring lineup for a pickup game for fun is not a thing...

One thing I want to emphasize, the scrimmage was treated as an authentic true simulated game. Both parties involved in the scrimmage don't really have the luxury of playing loose/pick-up style game. Paulsen was as loud and active as he would be versus vcu in the A10 tournament.

Geez, how did Boyd, Mar and X not play then? Seems like a great opportunity in mid summer for these guys. If Mar and Boyd are still on the mend suddenly those 9th overall projections are looking pretty real.

I can speculate and say, it may or may not be coincidentally the 2 guys that suffered injuries last year and perhaps they could still not be 100%. Even if they were 90%, no need to rush them out there in mid-July. I will try and find out definitively what's going on and report back.

Not too sure about XJ but hot damn if I'm not most excited to see him play.

I don't understand, they aren't allowed to hold practices until a certain date in the fall but they can do this? Aren't they strict about even the type of workouts they can do in the summer? Why not scrimmage pros/alum every couple weeks in the summer? Woudn't the P5 programs pay pros or get their alum to come play against their guys?

They're allowed a few hours of practice over a few weeks in the summer now.

MasonJoe, Kier is our most versatile scorer...deadly mid-range game, takes players off the dribble, and is right now our most consistent 3 point shooter (until Hartwell, JDS, or Greene prove otherwise). Also, Sleeperpick left a spot open for either Greene or Miller or Mar to take.

I think AJ is going to start on the bench, but he's had a few really good games that show he can be a big contributor if he keeps it under control. Outside of Miller, he is our best offensive rebounder plus he changes games with his shot blocking ability (something we do not have at all with him on the bench).

Kier can’t hit threes unless wide open. Greene can score from multiple spots and can create his own shot. Interesting to see if Kier can do that without Otis now ...

GIVING DAY 2023
Scrimmage Quick Takes

Starters: Hartwell, Greene Kier, AJ, Calixte (LOVE IT)

We don't know why XJ, Mar and Boyd did not participate.

There was a decent stretch when Miller, AJ and Calixte played together (#SIZE)

Greene led in scoring

Hartwell played a really nice game scoring-wise. Looked comfortable and shot well.

Paulsen took the game VERY seriously and coached as if it were a real game.

Miller and Pearson had some pretty good battles on both ends of the court. With each getting the better of the other at times.

Calixte had some really nice moments under the basket, held up well versus more experienced competition
Who won?

So is Daddy just not on campus yet? What’s going on there?

Wasn’t Sherrod supposed to be on the TBT team?

Is the coaching staff or BE planning on making the trip to Richmond?

Saw something recently about Ian “never jumping off a boat again” on Twitter. Maybe he got hurt, explaining why he was sitting out of the scrimmage.

We actually don't know if he can or can't because he never tries, but Greene shot 30% from 3 last year and Kier shot 37%. Greene scored 2 more 3s than Kier did, but had 25 more attempts. Miller had a better shooting percentage from 3 than Greene did, but he took almost no attempts (18 versus 114) so I don't think that translates over a full season to anything. Also, if Hartwell is going to start, I'm guessing he'll find Kier when he's open.

But like I said, Hartwell, Kier, X, AJ, Calixte doesn't mean Greene doesn't start. If AJ beats Mar out for the 4 and Greene beats Miller out for the 5th starting spot, I have no problem with that. Certainly, you're going to want Greene's FT shooting in end of game situations.

Too early to tell with the small sample size of ~7mins but I think he'll definitely get some minutes and shouldn't be a complete liability while on the court (tad more versatile than I thought, decent speed) . With that said, he'll still be relatively raw and maybe at best could average maybe like 4 & 4 this year, which is about what you'd expect from a freshman.
4 boards is a lot for a freshman, IMO. If he gives us 4/4 and shoots a decent percentage, to me that's fantastic

I'm less interested in starters than I am in finishers. Who is going to be on the floor when the game is on the line.

The best FT shooters would be — Kier, Greene,(maybe JDS or Boyd or Hartwell — not sure who is going to step it up yet), Miller, Mar.

The best rebounders would be: Kier, Greene, Miller, AJ, Calixte (maybe our best defensive set too).

Best shooters would probably be: Hartwell, Kier, Boyd (based on pre-wrist shooting percentage), Miller (or Greene), Miller or Mar (if he gets his JuJu back).

Those would be my guess on the various different scenarios.

My expectations for the coming year have been set pretty low up to this point. Now you guys are getting them up again.

Don't get your hopes up too much, we are probably at best an NIT team, unless something truly unforeseen happens.

I'll take an NIT, though.

So if it was an authentic true simulated game what was the outcome? How did the team play against the old guys?

I think that offensively, it's going to be tough to keep Hartwell off the floor this season. He's a solid ball handler, really quick, and knocks down shots. Kier will attack driving lanes, Greene will cut to the basket, and Calixte's development on the block will keep bigs from cheating up. If Miller can establish a reliable corner 3, in addition to his skills in the post, Hartwell will go a really long way in helping the offense establish spacing.

Game itself was close for the first 3 quarters (didn't play traditional 2 halfs) until the younger current Mason team pulled away late.

It was 53-50 to start the 4th but get this, our current roster went on a 26-0 run to finish the game. Final score was 79-50.

Impossible, current Mason guys lack SIZE

If our current guys beat a team with Pearson, Mo, and Will down low by 29, I think this ends any talk out there that Lamar should be hired to join our staff. Yikes!;)
