??Ian Boyd has not progressed in to the player we thought he would become as of yet.... consistent scoring threat, high level defender, etc. He is our 5th highest scorer on the team this year while averaging 27 minutes a game. Will he ever become an elite player, if so will he get there this year, next year, or ever? Right now he is just not the player we thought we had coming in.
Going back and looking at this thread..... what is pretty amazing is his offers and lack their of. Only us, Radford and Western Carolina were recruiting the 14th best kid in the state of NC. Something just doesn't seem right..... did the bigger schools see something in his game, or lack there of, to not recruit him? Being in the back yard of ACC, CAA, and A-10 schools why didn't he have more basketball offers??? Programs will know if the kid is going to play football or basketball - when visiting and talking with the kid and coach they will usually inform them of their intentions so they can work towards a scholarship.
Curious to know if scouts saw something in his overall game that alerted them they he may not translate in to a high caliber player for their program.
He just recently became the 6th man. As other posters said, he is playing through an injury.Last season we saw how exposive he was.??
He's averaging 7 and a half points and close to 5 boards a game as a sophomore 6th man.
That's not bad, to be honest.
Calling him a 6th man is a bit dishonest??

He’s started more games than not. I’m not saying he’s not the 6th man going forward, but in the context of his stats it makes them a bit more flattering than they really are.Not really. I doubt Paulsen is going to switch back to his original starting lineup at this point in the season. Calixte has started the last five games and has played increasing minutes each contest (last three games 29, 31, and 29 minutes respectively).

DJ3's brother uses spell check how sweetStop blaming these boys for our losses. These losses are on Paulsen shoulders. Paulsen refuses to adapt his system to the talent he has on the team. Paulsen will never be good enough to win any championship until he learns how to adapt to the talent he has on the team. Everyone has seen what could be if Paulsen would let Boyd play his game, but Paulsen doesn't give the kid a chance to show what he can do. 3 minutes here and 3 minutes there in not going to work. As soon as the kid gets a rhythm, Paulsen pulls him to put his favorite players in the game. Paulsen isn't teaching the kids to play as a team. They all play as individuals, which will equate to losses.

I mean, fair enough. I get why you would say that. He’s started more games than not. I’m not saying he’s not the 6th man going forward, but in the context of his stats it makes them a bit more flattering than they really are.
we absolutely needed someone of Boyd's character on this team. I truly think it would have been a dumpster fire without his leadership and happiness these last 4 years. I may be lower on his actual basketball ability to change this team than most I am as high as possible on his character. I wish him the best and know he has a bright future outside of basketballhttp://gmufourthestate.com/2020/03/02/mens-basketballs-ian-boyd-reflects-on-his-time-at-mason/:
"Boyd has had a plethora of impressive moments during his time at Mason, but perhaps none of them can top the end of conference play during the 2017-18 season.
It’s hard enough to hit one game-winning shot in basketball. You have to be in the right place, at the right time, and keep a cool head to execute under pressure.
But Boyd didn’t just hit one buzzer-beater that year. He made three. In back-to-back-to-back games.
Dubbed “Mr. SportsCenter” by his teammates, Boyd made a three-point shot at Saint Joseph’s, a layup vs. UMass and a tip-in at vcu, winning the game for the Patriots each time.
When reflecting on that three-game stretch, Boyd said, “To be honest… I just wanted to win [the games]. When it did happen, I was just as surprised as anybody else.
There is one aspect to this story that fans might forget: Boyd didn’t start in any of the games in which he hit the game-winning shot.
'One of the things that we try to instill in our program is that it doesn’t matter who starts, it matters who finishes,” Paulsen said. “Well, you can’t hit three straight buzzer beaters if you’re not on the floor. He didn’t start any of those games, but he was a guy we wanted on the floor at the end.'
Despite a tweet from SportsCenter of his three-point shot against St. Joseph’s going viral, accumulating over 3,700 retweets and 13,900 likes, Boyd said that his favorite buzzer-beater was the tip-in against vcu.
'We beat them, at vcu, and on their senior night,' Boyd reasoned."
"Boyd retains one more year of basketball eligibility due to his injury, but he will still be celebrated on Senior Night on March 4 against Saint Louis.
When Boyd’s time as a Patriot ends, whenever that may be, he said that he hopes people remember him as a person who could always smile and light up a room. That smile remains a constant, even during this season when he has fought through injury and adversity."
His HS highlights are really impressive. I want him back next year. I think his wrist injury really limited his potential
