It's subjective. I'm sure the type of students that are voluntarily taking the time to fill out a Princeton review survey in their own free time probably aren't the most social and happy students. And it's probably like online reviews where statistics show that one will make more of an effort to complain and write a bad review than praise and give a positive one.

My usual weekly schedule at Mason. Best 4 years of my life for sure.
Monday: Class
Tuesday: Class
Wednesday: Class
Thursday: Class then Auld Shebeen
Friday: Party at the house
Sat: Party at the house
Sunday: Rest

To follow Hate Thread protocol... I hate weird, awkward, emotional and unhappy students. It's nothing beer can't fix.

Even if that’s true, the anti social students are happier at other schools.

I hate no one gets the rather arbitrary nature of the question to come up with the results.

I hate that the volatile results - i.e. - schools coming in and going out from year to year isn’t recognized that the survey results could just be a point in time feeling by students. Could have been stressed out by exams.

I have a kid there now in his senior year and he has loved it.

I hate that I also had a really great time at Mason... but I am not tone def to realize I am one of 35k students at the campus.

The campus has a sexual assault and Title IX issue that is super prevalent that keeps getting swept under the rug (hell the student body president was a serial predator at one point)

Many of the "anti-social students" have absolutely nothing to do on a campus that may not be a commuter school anymore but one that is certainly dead on weekends. (not everyone is outgoing enough to join a club sport, greek life or clubs) and honestly the ones we did have were so bland and boring in comparison to other schools.

The more liberal outspoken students on campus hate the fact that multiple departments are funded by Koch brothers and that the law school is named for Scalia (I couldn't give a shit either way)

Campus is extremely hideous (I understand the need for construction but I get other people's opinions)

I, like Patsby and Pikapps son had an amazing 4 years at Mason.... but a LOT of people clearly don't and I just hate the "well I had a good time so that means everyone else must have" copout that has been stated twice on here...

I hate the fact that people might be more unhappy now versus the years Mason was never on this list because newer students reflect the weakening of American youth. I hate to think with a newer larger on campus population wit brand new recreational and dining facilities that previous - and happier - Mason students never had these newbies still find a way to complain.

I hate that Mason has robots delivering ducking food directly to these lazy SOB students and they still complain.

I hate that the Princeton Review survey team properly dropped all their surveys off to the Vegetarian Transgender INCEP field hockey club thus skewing the results.

The deadness of the campus starting Thursday night is a legit concern. I was an out of state student (from Florida) and couldn’t just go home on the weekends (instead, I made homes out of my roomate’s and other friend’s parents’ houses while I was there.

I hate that you don’t seem to understand that the generation of the students at Mason is the same generation of the students at every other college to which they are being compared in this study. Face it, we have a cultural problem. Why? I don’t know. But it is even reflected in these boards all the time. I am one of the first to shoot back at overly-negative posters that seem to enjoy spreading misery. But the university needs to acknowledge this problem (internally) and take it seriously.

Unhappy students become unhappy alumni (or transfers/drop outs) that don’t donate or go to basketball games or promote the Mason brand.

Some big contributing factors...that I hate:

Not having football. That’s 6 tailgate/game day events we don’t have.

High percentage of commuter students that still live with their parents. I’d hate life too.

We probably have a high number of non-traditional students relative to the national average. They’re most likely not to be highly involved and connected.

Mason has 26k undergrad students. We average 3,500-4000 freshman a year. Subtracting transfers and drop outs, that means around 40-50% of the entire student population transferred in, mostly from NOVA. A student is mostly likely going to get better connected who enrolled freshman year and lived on campus.

High cost of living and limited options to live off-campus (near the university) causes students (who live with other students) to be disbursed... which only even further reduces the student campus presence on the weekends. Imagine if Fairfax was more of a college town and all the surrounding houses and streets were nothing but college students. There would a lot more bangers for sure.

Greek life is the biggest social scene, however the school won’t invest in them and minimally support them and often out to get them.

I hate that you made such excellent points. The 40-50% transfer in rate from primarily NOVA is the biggest problem. I am guessing those transfers have very little attachment to the school.

That the stated goal of 45,000 students eventually means more of the same semi-open admissions and continued construction. And speaking of construction, the fact that the entire middle of campus is fenced off for construction contributes to the ugly campus ranking and the unhappy students.

The modern campus look is fine (except for some real stinkers), but there needs to be some traditional campus area where students can be reminded that they are on a campus and not a business park. The trend at other universities seems to be returning to timeless, traditional campus buildings. How many new modern buildings today will look like the horrible 70s and 80s designs?

I hate that the likely answer as to why Mason's out-of-state tuition is higher than the others is due to some state requirement on how to calculate the price.

I hate that this idea is no where near Title IX compliant but wish we would just say f**k it. Let’s do it. We would need to cut 3 men’s programs and probably add a women’s team. I’d propose cutting men’s golf, tennis, and swimming while adding field hockey. Zero chance that would happen though.
