You have to wonder about what was in the survey and how it was conducted when the Naval Academy, Seton Hall, University of Tenn and Xavier university scored ahead of us.

Are kids unhappy they have to study?
Based on how strongly students disagree with the statement, "I am happy at my school."

Also, Xavier University of Louisiana.

I’m not surprised we’re near the top. I’m not going to bash the university that I love, but the survey results fall in line with what I hear from current and recently graduated students.

Well I have a kid in there now and his buddies come over quite a bit to the House of Pikapp and they seem happy.

That's a junk question, though. It provides no useful or actionable information.

What are the top 5 reasons why students you talk to are/were unhappy at the school?

For reference, Mason was ranked 20th for least happy in 2018, they did not rank in the bottom 20 between 2014-2017.

I hate that McGill U being on this list is probably the real reason Jimmy McGill changed his name to Saul Goodman.

I also hate that Ch 9 didnt do some actual work to find out why students at Mason are unhappy.

I hate to disagree (see what I did there?). The fact that students self-report being unhappy, so much so as to rank among the most unhappy universities, should be incredibly actionable information. Meaning, the university should take action to find out why this is so and change it.

It’s also very useful information if you’re a prospective student and trying to evaluate your options.

I get that having a lot of unhappy students isn’t good for morale, but no, it’s not useful information for a prospective student unless you know the reasons for it. That question is not very helpful without qualitative data to back it up.

I hate that you can’t think of it as a screening question. It’s like taking a temperature. Now we know we have a fever. We don’t know what is causing it and we don’t know where it came from necessarily. It’s getting worse and we know now that we should probably go to the doctor. It’s useful and actionable information, although more information is needed for a diagnosis and cure. Time to swab and culture.

Are you trying to dismiss this as insignificant? I sure hope the new president won’t.

Not saying it’s I significant, but the bottom 20 has had some damn good schools in it the last several years — pretty much all the military academies, UC Berkeley, Emerson, Cal Tech, NYU, Stony Brook, Amherst, Cooper Union.

Very few of the schools listed have been listed for more than a few years consecutively (Mason wasn’t on the list from 2010-2017, so it’s tough to know if this is a systemic thing or not).

I wouldn’t worry too much about it as an administrators unless it shows up in transfers, dropouts, and lagging applications, then I might start worrying.

Not surprised by those schools.

Maybe that’s the next step.... I’m sure Mason will look into it

Having gone to Tennessee football tailgate before I can agree with DJ3
Based on the current and former students I am around on a day-to-day basis, and having lived and worked here in Knoxville for the last 2 1/2 years, I don't.

Sorry you didn't enjoy your tailgate though.

Now, back to Mason.

I hate no one gets the rather arbitrary nature of the question to come up with the results.

I hate that the volatile results - i.e. - schools coming in and going out from year to year isn’t recognized that the survey results could just be a point in time feeling by students. Could have been stressed out by exams.

I have a kid there now in his senior year and he has loved it.

It's subjective. I'm sure the type of students that are voluntarily taking the time to fill out a Princeton review survey in their own free time probably aren't the most social and happy students. And it's probably like online reviews where statistics show that one will make more of an effort to complain and write a bad review than praise and give a positive one.

My usual weekly schedule at Mason. Best 4 years of my life for sure.
Monday: Class
Tuesday: Class
Wednesday: Class
Thursday: Class then Auld Shebeen
Friday: Party at the house
Sat: Party at the house
Sunday: Rest

To follow Hate Thread protocol... I hate weird, awkward, emotional and unhappy students. It's nothing beer can't fix.
