GMU: Where Construction is Tradition

I would cut down the patch of trees in front of the glass end of Fenwick. I get that people love trees. I love trees but to leave such a small patch of trees that originally grew as part of a much larger wooded area doesn't look good. I would expand the concourse area between Robinson and Johnson to the front of the new Fenwick glass side. Then plant a few new trees that would look good in 20 years.

Nooooo! Trees > concrete. Much better for people in the library to look out at trees.

Why widen the concourse? The rather wide sidewalk from Southside to the clock tower isn't overwhelmed with foot traffic.

I am sure a building will eventually go there and all the trees will be cut down.

Hopefully they get the funding soon to tear down the old A wing and expand the "quad." God I just hope that a good chunk of that "faster, farther" money goes to campus facilities because there's still a whole lot that needs to get built/renovated before we start to get the cool little extra's we want like a practice facility, greek row, better Mason Stadium, etc...

That is the next phase of the library development. That wing is going away. The new Library is great The decor is fine - I think the furniture is a bit funky - but that is the trend across all campii in the nation. The collaboration spaces were very well planned. Much larger and more efficient than the old Fenwick.

The design pattern is to leave patches of older growth trees or move some signature old growth trees to other parts of campus. What I do like about all of the work on campus is the much longer sight lines that make the campus feel and look as big as it really is. We have a 708 acre main campus and before all of this construction you could not feel it - now you can. It has developed into a major "place".

I can't honestly say that I like it. I'm not sure what it is but everything looks very cookie cutter and for some reason dated (mid 2000's ikea catalog). Another issue is the lack of branding. Can we have GMU signage, personalized Mason tables, chairs, something that tells you that you are at Mason. Those pictures could've been taken from any building on any campus. Outside looks pretty sweet.

Keep in mind this is Phase I of the new library - phase II is next. When everything is finished - signage and other wall art and hangings will be added.

Unfortunately they've stated that the funding isn't yet in place for phase II and is a few years down the road.

I heard that but it is not that it won't happen - it was included in the state budget .

When will Mason see that money? It'd be nice sooner rather than later. Seems stupid to be paying upkeep costs on an empty section of building. The north sector master plan shows them putting a reflecting pool type thing over there when it's knocked down. Would love to see that soon.

Probably later in the year. The state legislature won't let this project hang since it is a library and it was approved.

That is athletic academic center.

Unlike where they want to out the practice facility- integrated into the rack with a separate gym, office, and locker room space .

Makes a lot more sense to integrate it into the RAC than to attach it to the Patriot Center (which was the original plan). This leaves more flexibility for the long-term future plans for the arena.

Agreed - however the RAC will become gigantic

The Hazel Hall stuff and all 3 athletic facilities are under the heading "NON-GENERAL FUND AUTHORITY/100% DONOR FUNDED"

That is interesting. Have donations already been secured? If so, it has been kept a big secret.

Or, are they using funds from the farther faster campaign?

Or, are we on the precipice of our first athletics targeted campaign?
I wouldn't be surprised if some donations have already been secured, but from what Brad Edwards said to Mason fans in Charleston, there is supposed to be some sort of athletics campaign coming as an additional part of the Faster Farther campaign. The details were sketchy.
