You're never gonna get a new arena publicly financed here, but at least the legislature could give its blessing to a plan for Mason to finance one on its own.

Not sure what the rules are on bond financing for entities like universities. If we could raise the cash for a new arena by floating G.O. bonds backed by the state, that would certainly be a quicker path than relying on donations.

Interesting. We did that with the Johndon Center.

I'm sure the state has some restriction on how much debt universities can carry at any time.

I looked at what JMU is doing and they're definitely planning to finance their new $88M arena mostly through bonds.

They're also doing a fundraising campaign related to the arena, though. I guess if you can get a chunk of private money to put into such a project, it saves you more in the long run when you consider interest on the bonds.

$88M won't go as far in Fairfax as it does in Harrisonburg, obviously, but that's something I would like to see Mason consider once the practice facility and locker room upgrades are finished.

I am so tired of this argument! yes land in Fairfax is more. But Mason already owns the land. Materials are the same costs. Yes paying the crews would cost more money, but its not this dramatic price difference that's impossible to overcome.

Truth. I just hate excuses as to why Mason can't do what other schools do.

Mason can do anything they want, they just choose to pursue other initiatives. Athletics isn't on their top priority.

Have a feeling the southwest sector plan would get priority on bonds. The debt was all authorized and those projects were next on the docket and then the plug got pulled because they wanted to lower the debt first.

Well you are right - we have the land - 705 acres half of it undeveloped. This can be done.

Not sure anyone's arguing we don't have the land. The land directly adjacent to EBA is nothing but surface parking, you could build it right there and continue to use EBA until completion. The problem is the money.

No, they wouldn't, because then they'd have to build another physical education building. You do realize that it's an academic building as well as the place for intramural sports, and the place where the volleyball teams play their matches, right?

I have no idea why you have a problem with a dedicated practice facility as an add-on to this building as opposed to, say, an add-on to EBA, or why you think giving 150,000 square feet of space to 13 athletes is a good idea.

For better or worse, having a practice facility for the main sports at a school is just the cost of doing business in the landscape of Division I athletics.

Is Mason allowed to do that? I imagine the process of getting all the permits for the transition would be a nightmare. Moving buildings on 495 is next to impossible during rush hour.

We will be the first university in the world with an all-imaginary campus.

You are thinking about it all wrong - you just lift up the campus and then the Earth spins on it's own. Then you set back down the campus in it's new location. Actually pretty simple.

I've been reading that some high profile athletes think the world is flat. If they are correct, and surely they are, does the Earth even spin??? Seems like a pretty big expense just to find out the Earth is flat. I think we need to move it using the trains the circus will no longer be using, and maybe even hire all of those folks to do it. They're master movers and need work.

I stand corrected, the fact the Earth is actually flat does expose a pretty big flaw in my plan.
