"Many of my sorority sisters helped establish the culture of the masonettes and are still involved today. I watched all my husbands basketball games when he played for Mason and the masonettes were fantastic entertainment that contributed to the overall patriot pride. Not allowing them to compete in the highest level puts a ceiling on their potential ability and achievements. This is not the mason way."

"As the proud parents of a former Masonette, we witnessed for four years the teamwork that was displayed by the young ladies that allowed them to come together and perform as a cohesive unit. There willingness to put in the necessary time and training to work toward their goals of top performances both on game days and in competitions only enhanced their ability to be successful in their academics and their post-graduate careers. We believe it would be a big mistake to stop the participation of National Competitions. We ask that you take the time to consult those involved in these programs and take another look at the whole picture and the impact your decision will have specifically on this program and overall on the way the public views GMU priorities."

I wonder if this issue is the reason for the postponement of the tryouts - http://gomason.com/sports/2017/3/23/Masonettes.aspx:

"Tryout Information – Updated 4.20.17
The original date for tryouts (April 30, 2017) will now be postponed. An informational email will be sent to those that have completed the tryout paper work. Please continue to check the website for more information."

it might be because their coaching staff resigned...

I'm sorry to hear they abandoned the students they care so much about.

If I'm not mistaken, Michelle Chin is a former Masonette and the head coach of the Masonettes since 2000. I believe that her dedication to the Masonettes is obvious, and I certainly don't blame her for resigning under these circumstances.

The question is how has this enhanced the gameday experience?

What circumstances? Saying the school isn't paying for you to go to a national dance competition? It's not like BE eliminated the Masonettes or anything like that. If something like this sends you over the edge you had one foot out the door to begin with.

I usually don't take the side of the higher ups in charge, but in this case BE is totally 100% in the right.

I know Michelle - my wife and Michelle have been friends for 20+ years. She did not have "one foot out the door". It would be the equivalent to BE telling Paulsen that they can play their regular season schedule, but when it comes time to their biggest competition, say the A10 or hopefully the NCAA tournament, they are on their own.

I'm not going to get into the argument on if it's the right or wrong thing to do, everyone has their opinions on that, but I don't think you should question her loyalty. When something you've worked so hard for has been cut from you, it's a tough pill to swallow. Nationals is basically their super bowl.

There are currently 2,035 supporters of the petition. It certainly appears to me that the Masonettes' network of supporters would gladly finance their participation in national championships. So, why not give them the opportunity to self-finance future competitions and pay off any related existing deficit?

And, how many of these supporters will no longer attend games now because of this?

it sounds like it wasn't really about the expense of the competitions & travel, but the heavy insurance cost of a competitive cheerleading squad. decision must have been if the cheerleaders can't compete then masonettes can't either.

GIVING DAY 2023
Over 2K supporters? Where the F are these people during the games that the Masonettes are performing at?

the same passionate people who hated "EagleBank Arena" and that the Cage Gym was going away so they couldn't play badminton...

Do the Masonettes really cost that much?

http://masonhoops.com/board/threads/gameday-experience.895/page-21:

"If they had done any research at all, they would have found that the Masonettes’ budget has been $5,000.00 every year since 1992."

As I've said, if the Masonettes are willing to self-finance their trips to the National Championship, then they should be permitted to do so. And, if the cheerleaders are willing to do the same (including paying the insurance premiums), then they should be allowed to do so also.

I am confused.

I would assume in this age of "War Against Women" that it would be applauded not to have young women having to perform simulated and sexualized dance moves in form fitting clothing to the enjyment and cheers of a largely male audience.

You sure about the audience demographic for these competitions?
