Here's a crazy concept, when DP looks at basketball skills (passing, rebounding, defense, shooting, etc.) maybe the freshmen overall are just plain better?

Not crazy at all. It's fair to say at this point that Holloway and Jenkins aren't much better than they were as freshmen - Holloway is essentially a chucker on offense and a liability on defense, and Jenkins has all the physical talent in the world but hasn't been able to turn into the player we all wanted him to be. Again I blame Hewitt for their total lack of development.

Lost in all this "why didn't Holloway play?" talk is that Jaire had the best game of his young career. Scored 20 points on 13 shots from all over the floor and looked like a legitimate scorer. He and Otis are going to form an excellent backcourt for years to come.

The funny thing that no one has mentioned is when Paulsen was trying to get Michael Rudy in inside of 2 minutes, had to call timeout, did the substitution signal to the ref, and it was the first and only coach/team timeout of the 2nd half, so a full media timeout had to occur.

In addition, this game was really quick, 1 hour 45 minutes at most, I think the reducing the team timeouts from 5 to 4 helped a lot.

I thought a rule was instituted in 2011 that all timeouts had to be used. :bricks:

This.

We have a coach that actually nitpicks fundamentals. Looking at our offensive and defensive efficiency numbers and advanced stats over the last couple years it is easy to see past regime let a lot of bad habits slide. Why should holloway play over a freshmen working his a** off in practice and doesn't have his bad/entitled attitude? Because he hits 2 or 3 three-pointers a game?

Sometimes a coach is so stupid that he doesn't know who his best players are. The Virus continued to start AO until it became obvious to even The Virus that he was a liability.

We no longer have a stupid coach. I have confidence DP knows his personnel. There must be a good reason why PH and JR are not playing.

This could explain the distribution of PT, but not why Holloway was a DNP-CD in a game that saw action by both walk-ons.

It also doesn't explain why players who are shooting 17% and 30% are playing a lot more minutes than someone who is shooting 45%.

I think there could be some "looking to the future" favoritism going on, and like I said Paulsen didn't really need another shooter on the floor last night, but I think Holloway could and should be part of the regular rotation.

To me, this becommes a much bigger thing if Pat DP-CD's next game. A one game benching is a teaching moment. More than that, and you're in doghouse territory.

Wait, I'm confused. I could've sworn that it was earlier in this very thread that you admitted that none of us know what it going on behind the scenes.

Without that knowledge, it's pretty much impossible to say whether Pat should or shouldn't be part of the regular rotation.

Then again, if not for speculation, message boards will go the way of the dinosaur and the daily newspaper. So speculate away!

There's not much speculation...based on our bench's production so far, I think we need another shooter...Murrell and Abram have both struggled so far this season with no sign of improvement (in fact, Murrell barely shoots the ball at all when he comes in now). So where are we going to go for bench production? Jenkins? No. Dixon? No. Murrell? No. Abram? No. Tate? No. Rudy? No.

The best shooting season of Holloway's career was his sophomore campaign, when he shot 41% from 3 but
40% from the field overall. Last year he shot 33% from 3 and 39% overall. Those are very bad averages that speak to his lack of development.

He's also entirely one-dimensional. He's never averaged more than 0.7 assists per game or 1.5 rebounds per game. He's purely a shooter, and he doesn't even shoot that well.

I'm really not trying to pile on him but if Paulsen considers him a sunk cost and would rather develop Grayer/Abram/Murrell that's entirely understandable.

Frankly, I don't have a problem if Coach Paulsen has decided not to include Holloway in the rotation. But, again, if he's playing the walk-ons and not a healthy Patrick, then there is obviously an issue. As Herndon wrote, let's see if he plays tomorrow night.

BTW, I really like that each freshman can play multiple positions effectively.

I believe both Jenkins and Abrams have supplied a spark off the bench and will only get better. They both just need more coaching. I like the way Paulsen is building our bench, it's not like he has much to work with. Kam has a good looking shot and will be more productive as he gets more reps - think Isiah Tate.

While PH's situation is dissapointing, DP is doing the right thing if his attitude is part of the problem. Plus I think the more we give these freshmen playing time, the bigger benefits over the next 4 years. Can you imagine Otis and Grayer by their senior year? Yowsa!

I think putting Pat in with the walk-ons would have been more of an insult than sitting him. We've heard from the Bucknell folks to expect an 8 or 9 man rotation come conference play. I notice Danny is even starting to sit more and we're going with mostly a 3-man big rotation too.

Pat buried himself with the suspension and 3 years of tape that shows he's the polar opposite of a prototypical Paulsen defender. He needs to try and earn his way back into the rotation otherwise his senior year will look a lot like Gray's did.

Again, the 6-game suspension & 3 years of tape did not stop Paulsen from playing Patrick in the previous 2 games.
