I'm more concerned with the D than the O at this point. I'd like to see another big banger down low added for next year. Mar would be even more of a stud offensively if he didn't have to worry about mixing it up on D with guys who have 50 pounds and maybe an inch or two on him.

Well, again, next year most likely the depth chart is going to look like Reuter/Calixte/AJ at the 5. I seriously doubt you'll see Mar guarding the 5 on anything other than a switch after this season.

Week 3 rundown is up. I put together some interesting data about how bad we got beat in the paint and outside the arc last week:

Thanks for the nice rundown. Lack of size is obviously killing GMU against teams in the top half of the NCAA. It has been exploited to a degree by the lesser teams as well. If "positionless" basketball is the trend - ok, but GMU is gonna need more size to get into the top four of the A-10. Last year the team had Jenkins and a 6'2" beast of a guard. I still think it's gonna take more beef up front than just Reuter and Calixte.

Even if I'm wrong and Reuter and Calixte are enough to compete next year - I think they need another big guy in case of injury.

I think a big body like Relvao may have been enough to get GMU to 1-1 in Cancun. Doubt he would have made a difference against Louisiana Tech and their three balls - but I'm betting Fresno State doesn't get 40 in the paint with him in the line up.

I agree, we went on our late run when Calixte was in the game, but he picked up fouls so quickly. Typical freshman big.

The more I think about it, I'm so impressed with Mar. I expected to see flashes of talent. By no means did I expect to see a polished product. Plays out of position and stays out of foul trouble. Like damn he is going to be so good!

Annnnnnnnnnnnd it begins. :bricks:

If I had a wishlist for how the second half of this season is going to go, it's that Calixte gets acclimated enough to take over playing the majority of the minutes at the 5, Mar can then move over to the 4 almost exclusively, and Boyd starts coming off the bench (because we need someone who can come off the bench who is a threat to score). 0AJ can backup Calixte and Mar at both the 4 and the 5.

Do I think this is actually going to happen? No. But it would be nice.

agreed. I used to love Boyd's game. But he needs to relax a little, and work on his ball handling

I'd love this too, but I don't think we can expect that much out of a freshman big, unless Calixste is that much ahead of his development than where Relvao and Temara were as freshmen.

Disagree. As much as Relvao may have covered some space and maybe reduced opponents ability to get in the paint, I think he probably would have been gone after and probably fouled pretty quickly, unless he improved his athleticism and quickness that much over the off-season. They could have used him as depth, but I'm not convinced he would have been that much of an impact.

Relvao was the key the season, we are screwed, obviously you guys

I've learned a relvaoble lesson. To suggest that a 6'9" guy may have helped against a mighty Fresno State team that scored 40 in the paint against GMU equals "You think Relvao is a Basketball God" to some posters.

No problem if you disagree but it is kind of funny that it leads to "this clown thinks Relvao was the key to the season" snickering.

This team isn't going anywhere without Relvao that it was going with him, but yeah - I think he may have made a difference in a five point loss to Fresno State.

Regardless - I hope Paulsen hauls another big in his place. Perhaps someone we all can agree is a difference maker.

The only reason I disagree with this is because this loss was a lot worse than the 5 points made it seem. Fresno got up big early, got complacent, and coasted. They were the better team regardless of if we had Relvao or not.

Fair point - GMU had nearly as horrific a 1st half as they did against Louisiana Tech the night before.
