I mean they probably don't factor in a $50k tourney at the start of the year. High price but considering the program needs cash for facilities but also really needs the post-season experience I'll pay it.

I guess I like seeing more basketball for this team in March, but would also not hate $50K or so going towards a practice facility

Yeah I'm with you. But if we get two home games with ~2000 people in there at 20 a pop it should about break us even. And then the program pretty much gets free post-season basketball. Obviously I don't know how operating costs factor into all this because we don't run the arena. But hopefully we can get 3k in the building. Maybe if we make it all the way and get two home games out of the final we can even make some money towards that facility.

"Is it true schools have to pay to host games in the CBI?

Yes and no. In the past, teams in the CBI have paid $35,000 to host first round games, $50,000 in the quarterfinals and $75,000 in the semis.

ULM athletic director Brian Wickstrom said there is a revenue sharing plan in place with the tournament that covers the cost.

There is no guaranteed minimum that ULM owes the CBI, and at the very least all of the university's event management costs are covered, which Wickstrom estimated to be around $2,000.

Whatever money ULM makes over $37,000 — that's the $2,000 in event costs plus the $35,000 for hosting — it gets to keep.

So yes, if ULM was to hit the magic number of $37,000 on this thing, then that goes to the CBI, but the university is not putting down $35,000 from the start."

Not saying it's not worth it even if we don't, but will we make that money back?

The way Pablo's post reads there seems to be revenue sharing that prevents a large loss. Mason and GW seem to be the only two that could theoretically profit because of venue size and ticket price. I can't tell if it costs 50k to host the first round and quarter final, or just the quarter. If it's the former I can see Mason making a profit. Especially if we make the final and get a home match with GW.

What does that mean, though? Do they pledge "up to $35,000?" (meaning if they make $20,000 from the game, they give the organizers $20,000). Or do they give the organizers $35,000 up front to host the game?

The way I read this revenue sharing plan, the former is correct. The host school covers its costs, but the CBI gets all of the additional revenue up to the the maximum guarantee amount for that round (i.e., $35,000 for the first round) Any revenue in excess of the school's costs and the maximum guarantee amount would go to the school.

So, the bottom line is that any loss or profit for the schools would probably be minimal.

Why not just play on the road. The reason for the tourney is to get experience. Well why not get the experience at a fraction of the cost?

Because someone has to pay it and we have a chance of profiting by being at home. Also it's probably a random draw.

Break even at $20 a ticket is about 1,800 (paying) fans. Hard to see us breaking that.

That's the minimum ticket cost though. I'm assuming some people will be paying more. As far as operating costs, don't a fair amount of those get paid by the company that runs the arena?

The discounted price being offered for season and partial season ticket holders is $18. Why would anyone be paying more than the $20 face value?
