XJ and AJ were the story tonight.

When we were struggling with their press, XJ had a calming factor that centered everyone when we were getting flustered. I felt safer when he had the ball in his hand. Pretty amazing for a Freshman.

AJ is just a defensive monster. Santos seemed scared the entire game because of AJ's presence. Even when he doesn't get the actual blocks, AJ alters shots on almost every other play. He's just got so much heart and never quits. He is an exceptioal talent physically and now he is matching it by his in game smarts. He is by far our MVP.

Everyone needs to chant the below at all of our remaining home games for AJ:

ONE MORE YEAR!
ONE MORE YEAR!
ONE MORE YEAR!

Even if he doesn't stay, he deserves the love from the fans. Love that kid.

All 12 of us at the games will scream it from the rafters. Kid has been playing out of his mind recently, gotta love it.

Agreed! And let me throw out Oduro (7 points, 9 boards) and Calixte (8 points, 3 rebounds) as the unsung heroes. Not only did they combine for 15 points and 12 boards in 38 minutes, but they bodied up Santos — with some effective double teams and blocks by AJ — to limit him to 11 points.

Great team win. Some things that immediately jump out:
  • +21 rebound margin. Mason destroyed vcu on the boards.
  • Freshmen played very well in a very tough road arena. XJ: 11-7-4 Oduro: 7-9-1
  • Calixte probably had his best game of the season. 4-4 FGs, 3 Rebs, 0 TOs. Very good defense.
  • Big men played well defensively. Held MSS to 4-10 FGs and only 11 points.
  • XJ played 32 minutes and had No Turnovers against the vcu pressure. Very impressive.
  • If you said before the game that the team would have 19 TOs and Greene scores only 7 points, you would would have predicted a long night for GMU. Great team win.

XJ as a freshman point guard having no turnovers against a press.

wow!

He was sensational. If I have one critique of our strategy tonight, it was that we left Hartwell on his own way too much. Hartwell is a good ball handler, but he was completely overwhelmed by their height and pressure tonight. Xavier’s height, size and composure made him much better suited to handle their pressure, but our coaches should have provided Jamal with more help.

Damn where has that team been the last two months? Went into vcu and punched them in the mouth. We out hustled and out muscled them all night. Can’t say enough good things about XJ, he’s going to be a great one. Congratulations to AJ on breaking the single season block record, he had some crucial ones tonight. Santos Silva and Evans turned into almost non factors..props to Oduro and Calixte.

Our bigs were embarrassed in the last meeting by Silva, great way to step up and show you got some stones. Silva was a non-factor after completely killing us last game

the XJ stat with turnovers is unreal, what a baller

Their fans want to fire their coach after this season and people think the fire paulsen crew is premature and unwarranted lol.

Missing the tournament 2 out of your first 3 years is not good given vcu’s resources, the team Rhoades inherited and a down A-10. That’s what they’re staring at after last night.

He has now lost twice to us at home. Not surprised the fans are unhappy.

LOLOLOLOL!!! They're complaining about the Refs!!

I mean come on. If the Refs. let them get away with more in Richmond, they'd have to start handing out rape kits in the visitors locker rooms.

For once the refs called the game more down the middle than usual. They still missed somethings like every ref group does, but for once when a Mason player would be thrown to the floor, they'd call a foul. And when a Mason player was held up or smacked on the arm they got a call.

When refs call the game correctly, as they did last night, it takes away every vcu advantage. When refs perceive vcu to be the better team (they do this a lot) and let them get away with the usual hacks that are fouls they are hard to beat.

F!ck vcu! I don't care if we don't win another game. That win last night was priceless and guarantees my season ticket renewal next year.

that game felt the same to me when Eric Maynor stole the CAA championship game away from us in the final minute of the game. It cost us a bid to the dance that year. Well last night, with NOTHING on the line but pride, we cost vcu a bid. Oh how glorious it was. I'm proud to be a Patriot!
