Fact is, we have a terrible defensive team. There’s no magic potion or strategic adjustment that will obscure that reality. It is what it is at this point.
Dave's pack-line defense goes under on ballscreens or switches them almost every single time. Oversimplifying, but the idea is to keep a body in front of everyone at all times and fight like hell to prevent the ball from getting into the paint. The concession is that you'll give up some good looks from deep, but not many teams are going to beat you if that's all they're getting.
We've got the worst of both worlds because we give up plenty of open looks from deep (by design, sort of) but our current personnel totally fail at keeping opposing guards out of the paint. Mobley is a good shooter and doesn't need much space - a couple of those threes were the result of Kier going under a screen and Mobley firing immediately, before Kier could close out effectively. This happens to Otis all the time since he's just too damn small to go under and effectively close out on taller shooters.
Why it's so easy for guards to get into the paint is still a mystery to me. It's exactly what's not supposed to happen when you're going under and switching constantly. Otis, Jaire, Kier, Boyd, and Javon all offer their own impressions of a traffic cone on the perimeter. Kier looks better because he has the lateral quickness and length to stay on his man's hip and continue harassing, but no one is very good at preventing their man from getting around them in the first place. Most disappointed by Boyd here - thought he'd be able to use his unique frame and athleticism to muscle up opposing guards without fouling, but that hasn't been the case. They've also all got this weird tendency to just usher their man into the paint without trying to body them up or handcheck or anything.
This has been happening all season. Part of the reason I want to see the team jump passing lanes more and gamble a little to force turnovers, since this straight-up defense is crap with this personnel. Steals also have the added benefit of turning into runouts a lot, and lord knows we need easy buckets.
TLDR: defensive scheme doesn't fit personnel. Need more turnovers.
