"As injuries and losses accumulate, a once-promising season has a chance to get away from the St. Bonaventure basketball team.
The latest of the walking wounded is swingman Chance Moore, who will not play when the Bonnies (15-4, 3-3) face off against George Mason (14-5, 5-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in an Atlantic 10 game at the Reilly Center (ESPN+, Bonnies Online Network, 100.1 FM).
Moore hasn’t practiced since injuring his foot during an 18-point loss at Duquesne on Saturday, and the way Schmidt spoke on Monday, his time away could be a longer term setback similar to teammates Dasonte Bowen and Jaxon Edwards.
'He’s hurt,' Schmidt said simply when he asked if the player had a chance to go against the conference-leading Patriots. 'Next man up.'
Moore went out with 7 minutes, 58 seconds remaining in the first half against the Dukes and did not return. He leads the Bonnies in scoring (14.9 points per game) and rebounding (7.7).
The loss of such a player would be a big blow to any team, but especially the Bonnies and their short bench. Bona is dead last, No. 355, in the country in bench points per game at 9.2 and 175 total.
The players expected to fill the void left by Moore – Duane Thompson, Noah Bolanga, and Miles Rose – produce only 3.5 points a game combined.
Ideally, Bowen would be ready to return to make up for Moore’s lost minutes, but Schmidt said the point guard, dealing with his own foot injury, isn’t ready. The Iowa transfer hasn’t played since Dec. 7 against Buffalo.
Valparaiso transfer guard Edwards, meanwhile, has only played five games thanks to a groin injury and is likely headed for a redshirt season."
"Schmidt called Mason 'one of the best defensive teams in the country.'”
