Q. When you recruit players, especially guards, what characteristics are you looking for besides Big East-level talent?

A. “You have to be able to shoot the ball, dribble the ball and pass the ball. But the core of it, the most important part of it, is how much do you love the game? I think that’s a lost art in today’s culture. They like the game, but there are so many other things going on. For me, I was the guy who played with a chip on the shoulder — the underdog who overworked, and I like to coach those same guys.”

He also said in his interview with the Expat Hoops guys he has no interest in players who don’t want to play at the next level after college.

Considering this is a Fire DP/Hire Tony thread there’s plenty to talk about. Has Tony really earned it?

Does anyone actually think DP won’t survive this COVID year?

His experience as a professional, as an Olympian, as an assistant at an elite AAU team and now in his 6th year as an assistant coach to two division 1 programs? I’d say with the contacts and relationships he has, especially in this area, if he has a good plan for how to become competitive in the A10 he definitely has earned a shot.

Tony is the lead recruiter for a program that pulls in so much talent it didn’t even need a top-150 combo forward from its home state, who happened to be Mason’s No. 1 target in the 2021 class.

With his networks in the DMV and the northeast corridor, he would be a natural recruiting in the A-10 — and that’s before you consider he could bring on Lamar, who has a ton of his own local connections.

At least then we’d have a puncher’s chance of keeping David Cox from plucking A-10 caliber recruits out of our backyard every year.

Yes, he has earned it. Checks every box for me.

COVID year or not, the games count, and if the AD pretends like they don't, this program is buried. There is a lack of interest and momentum, and it's been that way for awhile. I credit Paulsen for raising the floor, and running a clean program, but it's time for a spark.

This has all been said several times by me and several others on here, so when I say there's nothing to really talk about, I guess I should've said there's nothing new to talk about.

Mason needs to hire a big-name if they want to be relevant again. If Mason is OK with mediocrity, just keep Paulsen.

not necessarily a big name, but they need to take a swing and show they are serious about competing. It shouldn’t be a retread has been, but anyone who’s a proven winner or up and comer that would really bring some life is needed.

If a Skinn HC + Butler assistant doesn’t put a few more asses in seats I don’t think anything will.
I like this idea in theory, but I think getting the next big coach is like catching lightning in a bottle. I prefer a proven coach, like Turgeon, Shaka.

I would also love the coach from Wichita. He’s in hot water with the players. If Wichita let’s him go, I would love to give me a second shot.

Shaka about to get an extension after this year. Marshall just black listed himself for a couple years. I’m fine with someone like lonergan or skinn

If the following coaches with connections to Mason were interested, who would you hire as the next head coach?

Austin Claunch
Chris Caputo
Tony Skinn

I'm not sure. Skinn has the name recognition amongst Mason fans for sure. However, what about his in game coaching ability? I know nothing about that part.

Recruiting we all assume he would do great at.

Its an interesting hypothetical.

As much as Claunch is an up and comer, I couldn't pick him over Caputo or Skinn.

Caputo has been coaching a bit longer than Skinn, and has a little bit more experience. He has been working under L for 19 years at this point. Skinn of course was a player and connects well with recruits. The chance for Skinn to give this program a burst of energy that it sorely needs would be fantastic. I also think Caputo would do the same thing.

That said, I'd take either one of them in a heartbeat. Both are young energetic recruiters who have been assistants a long time at the BCS level and already had success at Mason. They also already know the region and what our fan base wants.

Sign me up for either one.

That said, pipe dream that either show up, but that's just me being skeptical.
