Turgeon won the regular season last year in the big ten and has placed top 5 in the big ten most recently including 4 of 5 years making the NCAA. They haven’t gone beyond the sweet 16 which is an expectation.

they may want to run him out of town in Maryland for their expectations, but I’d gladly take a guy like that at Mason.

Ncaa appearances, regular season championship. Top 5 in league all sound good to me.

This guy is far from a Hewitt and a one hit wonder. We can dream though, because he’s not coming. Just like Shaka Smart isn’t coming.

I agree. I would take Turgeon any day over Paulson, and while I'm not on the fire Paulson train, I am at the ticket booth checking prices.

And another quick note on Turgeon. He was the coach of the Wichita State Shockers when we beat them at their place in the bracket buster game on ESPN (and in the Sweet 16, too, but they were never in that game since Mason hit 4 3 pointers to open the game on a 12-0 run ... oh those were the days!). And it's that bracket buster game which I would argue IS the reason we got a bid in 2006 to the tournament.

You know who else was part of that game? Tony Skinn

Actually, the Patriots opened the game with a 9-0 run on Lamar Butler's 3-pointer followed by Folarin Campbell's 2 3-pointers - https://gomason.com/documents/2015/4/30/gmu-mb33.html.

I agree that the bracketbuster game was critical in getting the bid. Also, it didn't hurt that TOC was on the selection committee.

Figures. I go and try to play Pablo and mess it all up! Thanks for correcting my factoid.

Considering this is a Fire DP/Hire Tony thread there’s plenty to talk about. Has Tony really earned it?

Does anyone actually think DP won’t survive this COVID year?
The has Tony earned it is a good question that hasn’t really been explored? Anyone know what his responsibilities are? Main recruits he’s landed? Offensive/defensive philosophy? He checks a lot of boxes for us for immediate needs, but being that he’s an assistant there’s always going to be some question marks. I still think it’s a slam dunk hire but def interesting questions to think about while there’s no basketball being played.

Was thinking the same thing about Tony Skinn. Guy is a Mason legend, but question whether or not he would be a super hire.

For the record, I thought Paulsen was a solid hire. Bottom line at Mason's level, a coach has to prove they are great hire. No hire at Mason is going to be a slam dunk as far as returning Mason to national relevancy.

Answers some of your questions but not in any detail.

Q. When you recruit players, especially guards, what characteristics are you looking for besides Big East-level talent?

A. “You have to be able to shoot the ball, dribble the ball and pass the ball. But the core of it, the most important part of it, is how much do you love the game? I think that’s a lost art in today’s culture. They like the game, but there are so many other things going on. For me, I was the guy who played with a chip on the shoulder — the underdog who overworked, and I like to coach those same guys.”
